3 Date and Place of Birth 4 Atchison Kansas 4 July 24, 1897 4 Born into a prominent family. 4 The daughter of Amy and Edwin Earhart. 4 She had one sister named Muriel.

4 Early years 4 Amelia’s family traveled frequently and the girls attended private school while living with their grandparents. 4 From the age of ten years old the girls were homeschooled. 4 Amelia’s teen years were spent on the road with her parents.

5 Young Adult 4 In 1916 Amelia attended a finishing school because she could not yet afford university. 4 She started a crusade for equal rights and joined a secret society.

6 Work 4 Became a nurse’s aide in Toronto and worked at the Spadina Military Hospital. 4 In 1921 she took flying lessons and bought her first plane in pursuit of being an airwoman. 4 She became a social worker in 1926 and worked at denison house in Boston.

7 Middle Years 4 In 1931 Amelia married George Palmer Putnum. 4 She became the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo and the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean twice. 4 She set the womanize record for the fastest nonstop transcontinental flight 19 hours and five minutes.

8 Accomplishments 4 Amelia wrote, For the Fun of It, a novel about her life experiences. 4 She was the third person to win the Harmon Trophy for being America’s Outstanding airwoman.

9 Other Earhart Records 4 In 1933 she broke her own transcontinental record - 17hours, 7 minutes, 39 seconds. 4 She was elected first President of Ninety Nines; she became Vice President of Ludington Line, a commercial airline. 4 Amelia set a women’s speed record of 181.19 miles per hour.

10 Other Firsts 4 Became the first person to fly over the Pacific Ocean form Hawaii to California. 4 First person to fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City. 4 First person to fly from Mexico City to Newark to New Jersey.

11 In Memoriam 4 Amelia disappeared in 1937 at age thirty- nine during an attempt to fly around the world at the equator. 4 When Amelia Earhart became the first woman passenger to cross the Atlantic Ocean she also became America’s national hero. 4 She was a trailblazer in many ways as a women, as a pilot, and as a speaker.
