3 What is a Computer Operating System? A computer program that controls a hardware components of the computer Provides the user an interface to the hardware and software on the computer

4 Four Main Functions of an Operating System Manage hardware –BIOS –Memory Manage files –Hard disk –Floppy disk –CD drives Provide a user interface Manage applications

5 Two main components of an operating system Shell –Portion of the OS that relates to the user and to applications –Provides an interface to the user Kernel –Responsible for interacting with the hardware –It has more power to communicate with the hardware than the shell

6 Different types of user interfaces Command line –DOS –Unix –Show use of command prompt Menu driven –List of options displayed on screen –Windows Explorer Icon driven –Perform operations by selecting icons on the screen

7 Important OS terms Thread – A process that the CPU is aware of is called a thread Real mode vs protected mode –Also referred to as 16-bit mode vs 32-bit mode. –Specifies whether the CPU process 16 or 32 bits at a time FAT table –Table on the secondary storage device that tracks location of files on the device –Surface is divided into tracks and sectors –FAT16 – earlier version –FAT 32 – more efficient for large drives

9 Assignment –Browse through your Lab Manual and select some labs that you think are interesting. Prepare a listing of the labs that you select (lab number and title). Place your name at the top of the document Turn in at next class meeting. –Read Chapter 1 of your text –Find the Internet address of CompTIA. –What does CompTIA stand for? –There are two components to the A+ certification. What are they? –How many exams are part of the A+ certification? What are their names? –Describe three different ways you can start Windows Explorer –Answer the above questions on the same sheet where you specify your lab selections
