Pre-Engineering Ms. Lindsay Engineering Design Project

The Greenbird Up to 126 mph

The Greenbird Due to the shape of the craft, especially at such high speeds, the wings provide lift; a useful trait for an aircraft, but very hazardous for a car. To compensate for this, the designers have added small wings to "stick" the car to the ground, in the same way Formula 1 cars do.

The Wind Explorer

A German engineered vehicle called ‘Wind Explorer’ has managed to travel 5000km across Australia, using a combination of lithium batteries, a wind turbine and a large kite.

Vocabulary Wind- blowing air What causes Wind? - Uneven heating of the atmosphere from the sun - Irregularities of the earth’s surface - Rotation of the earth Wind energy- describes the process by which wind is used to generate mechanical and electrical energy.

What type of Engineer works on your project? Mechanical Engineer Electrical Engineer If an object or system has a moving part, it has benefitted from the influence of a mechanical engineer Aircraft carrier Hybrid car engine Wheelchair sailboat Electrical engineers develop components for the most fun things in our lives as well as the most essential MP3 players Digital cameras Roller coasters Medical tests Communication systems

Energy When and where do we use energy? Ideas??? Answer: We use energy all of the time.

What is Energy? Energy is the ability to do work, to make things happen, to cause change, or to start motion. Energy can move (be transferred) and change (be transformed) but it cannot be destroyed.

Energy Humans use energy to be active - To walk, talk, play basketball etc. We use energy to power our appliances, vehicles, lights etc Life as we know it would not be possible without energy production and consumption

Energy Energy is everywhere! Sometimes you can: Hear energy (sound) Feel energy (wind) Taste energy (food) See Energy (light)

The Four Sources of non- renewable energy Nuclear Oil Natural Gas Coal

The Five Sources of Renewable Energy Biomass Solar Geothermal Wind Water

Activity Imagine what today would be like if there were no electricity (permanently, not just a blackout). On a separate sheet of paper: Develop a timeline of what your day would be like. Consider what you would feel and what you would do. Work with the scholar next to you or on your own.
