Passage Three Website Design

Training target: In this part , you should try your best to form good reading habits. In order to avoid your ill habits such as regression , you should read with the card showed to you in the preface of this book. Keep reading the paragraphs from the beginning to the end without stopping.

Text Many people wish to create a flashy website. But creating a great website doesn’t happen at the tips of the fingers , it happens in the depths of the brain. Outstanding websites result from extensive planning. Prior preparation saves time and avoids frustration both during page creation and when updates and additions are required. The 3-step design tutorial will show you how to create high-end attractive websites.

Step1-Determine who use your site and their information needs Successful websites know who their customers are and why they visit , and they provide a responsive and attractive display to those viewers. Customers don’t visit our site because we spend time creating it; customers deserve maximum benefit from the time they allocate to us.

Step2-Editing your WebPages Step2.1: Establish an identity and use it consistently on all pages Viewers of our webpages , should know exactly who we are , and after being linked , should know if they’re still on one of our site’s pages. It doesn’t mean every page looks the same , but the colors and graphics we use should be consistent throughout the website. Establish a theme or identifying characteristic for your website.

Step2.2: Create user-friendly navigation On a well-planned website it’s quick and easy to get to information pages-that’s navigation. Plan navigation before pages are created. Esablish a navigation plan to ensure that viewers quickly get what they need and that new pages of content can be quickly inserted and located.

Step2.3: Page layout What’s the difference between a webpage and a GREAT webpage? A webpage gives us information; a GREAT webpage catches our attention that “Oh , Wow!” reaction-and gives information as expeditiously as possible-the key is planning and creativity.

To begin layout , analyze the information to be displayed and decide how it will be most readable. Pick the template that best accommodates that display. As your templates were created , page layout may have been anticipated.

There are three methods to create balanced page layout: blockquote margins , tables , and frames. Each method has pros and cons; it can be advantageous to use all three to build a website.

Step 2.4: Focus on text Viewers come to website for information and if they don’t get what they need , flash and glitz won’t bring them back. The best websites pack essential information into well-organized and well-written text. WebPages should not , however , be too heavily written text. Surveys show that Web users will not read long paragraphs of information. They prefer concise , bite-sized sections , clearly delineated so they can scan for the information they need. You should write essential content as clearly and concisely as possible with brief topic headers.

Step2.5 Use graphic images to enhance , not overpower Graphics are a special challenge for web designers , requiring balance between overuse and skimpiness. A site filled with graphic images can have charm and impact. The secret for effective graphics is to stick to the theme and identity of the website.

Step3—Putting your new site on the web Step3.1: Domain Name Registration The domain name is the address that users type into their web browsers ( Internet Explorer or Netscape ) to view your website. You select one or more proposed domain names such as Amazon.com or Buy.com. Your domain name must not be used by anyone else , and shorter is better. Choose a domain name that best reflects your business , products or services.

Step3.2:Publish the Website In this step you will be given instructions for uploading your new website to a computer known as “server” where it makes your information available to any web surfer in the world wide. You will need an FTP client in order to upload files to your web server. CuteFTP www.cuteftp.com are highly recommended.

Once a host has been selected , we will “publish” your new website for accessibility to everyone on the World Wide Web.

Step3.3: Promote your website Website promotion involves submitting your site address and search words to the top12search engines , which are Netscape , Yahoo , Microsoft , Alta Vista , Ask Jeeves , AOL , Excite , Google , Goto , HotBot , Looksmart and Lycos. These engines represent over98%of all U.S web searches. We can create special “headers” on your website that include all the necessary search engine friendly information. Other website promotion you may establish is: placing your web address on all stationery , business cards , and all broadcast and printed advertising media. You can begin as soon as your domain name is registered.

Creating and publishing your website is just “Tip of the Iceberg”. The remaining90%is unseen below the surface. These unseen features are important to the success of your website. They include meta tag creation , regular search engine submission , marketing exchange programs and many other promotional programs.
