constructionsite Risk Assessment Procedures

constructionsite Risk Assessment Procedures  Define the Work Activity  Understand the Work Method  Define your own competence and limitations to assess risk  Within those limitations list the principal hazards

constructionsite (cont)  Assess the nature of injury and choose a severity rating  Assess the likelihood rating  Calculate the Risk Rating  Consider Control Measures

constructionsite Quantifying Risk  List of Hazards – Workplace – Work Activity – Competence of Operatives  Injury Outcomes  Severity Rating  Likelihood Rating

constructionsite Outcomes (Examples)  Death  Electric Shock  Major/ Minor Fractures  Burns  Skin Disease  Sprains & Strains

constructionsite Severity Rating 6 = Multiple Deaths 5 = Death of one person 4 = Major injuries to several people 3 = Major injury to one person 2 = Minor injury or injuries 1 = Trivial injury or injuries

constructionsite Liklehood 6 = Common Occurrence 5 = Regular Occurrence 4 = Frequent Occurrence 3 = Occasional Occurrence 2 = Possible Occurrence 1 = Improbable Occurence

constructionsite Definitions  Distinguish between major, minor and trivial injuries – Reportable? – Nature of injury?  What is common, regular, frequent and occasional – Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly? – Based on industry statistics?

constructionsite Risk Rating  Risk Rating = Severity X Likelihood  Example – Major injury to an individual = 3 – Potential to occur frequently = 4 – Risk Rating = 12  Max rating = 36 : Min Rating = 1

constructionsite Control Measures  Procedures  Substitution or Elimination  Protective Equipment Extent of measures relate to Risk Rating

constructionsite Selecting Control Measures  Hierarchy of Control Measures – Avoid Risk – Combat at Source – Adapt work to the individual – adapting to technical progress – replace the dangerous with less dangerous

constructionsite Selecting Control Measures (cont)  Adopt a prevention policy  Collective preventative measures given priority over individual preventative measures  Appropriate information & training  Select appropriate PPE

constructionsite Issues to Examine  Can a procedure be introduced to reduce the risk  How can collective measures be applied  What information & training is required  If all else fails what protective equipment is required
