Semester 1 Review By Alyssa Vavra, Caroline Ditzler, Neha Vagvala

2 Classification What is the proper format to write a scientific name?
First letter in the genus capitalized, a comma between the two names, and both words italicized Name all seven characteristics of living things (MRS. GREN) Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition What is the forth largest classification level? Order Name the five kingdoms Animal, Plant, Fungi, Protists, Moneran, Name Whether Unicellular or Multicellular Animal- Multicellular Plant- Multicellualr Fungi- Multicellular Protists- Unicellular Moneran- Unicellular

3 Classification Lion- Tiger or Crocodile Pig- Primate or Squirrel
Dog-Fox or Cat Cougar- Lion or Tiger Bony Fish- Penguin or Snake List 3 forms of evidence scientists Use when classifying animals. Behavior Physical Appearance Methods of reproduction Locomotion (movement) Deit Habitat Cells and DNA analysis

4 Insects Egg, larva, pupa, adult Complete What is an arthropod?
An invertebrate animal of the large phylum Arthropoda, such as an insect, spider, or crustacean. Name the most diverse and populous order Coleoptera Name 4 characteristics of an insect Head, thorax, abdomen, two pair of wings, an exoskeleton, three pairs of legs, compound eyes, mandibles, and a pair of antenna Name the three different types of mouthparts Siphoning, piercing, sponging Name the 3 types of metamorphosis Molting, Incomplete, Complete What stages are included in incomplete metamorphosis? Egg, nymph, adult Egg, larva, pupa, adult Complete

5 Microscopes Name the 3 founding fathers Hooke, Leeuwenhoek, Janssen What did Janssen do? Made the first compound microscope

6 <<<Plant Cell
Cells Describe the difference between somatic and gametes cells Somatic cells are body cells and gametes cells are sex cells What main feature are Prokaryotic cells missing They don’t have a nucleus <<<Plant Cell

7 Cells What are 3 differences between plant and animal cells? Plant cells have a cell wall Plants have chloroplasts in their cells The vacuole size is larger in plant cells List all organelles and their functions(15) Cytoplasm- supports and protects cell organelle Cell membrane- protects, controls movement, and maintains homeostasis Chloroplasts- uses energy from the sun to make food Centrioles- play a role in cell division Chromosomes- controls activities of the cell and pass on traits Cell wall- supports, protects, and allows H2O, O2, CO2 to pass through the cell Nucleus- controls cell activities Nucleolus- site where ribosomes are made Nuclear membrane- controls movement of materials in and out of nucleus ER- carries materials through cells (internal delivery system) Ribosomes- produce proteins Mitochondria- breaks down sugar molecules into energy Vacuole- stores food, water, and waste Lysosomes- breaks down larger food molecules and digests old cell parts Golgi bodies- like a post office, it modifies and distributes proteins

8 Cells What is diffusion? Diffusion is the process of which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to a lower concentration. How is osmosis related to diffusion? Osmosis is the diffusion of water. What is active transport? Active transport is the movement of materials through a cell membrane using cellular energy. What are the three things for photosynthesis to occur? Water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide What is respiration? The process of which cells obtain energy from glucose.

9 Scientific Method List the steps of the scientific method in order?
Problem Question Research Hypothesis Develop your procedure Collect and record Data Analyze your results Draw Conclusion What takes place in each step? Problem Question- developing question Research- getting background information Hypothesis- making an educated guess based on research Develop your procedure- conduct your experiment and Collect and record Data- record your results from your experiment Independent variable- The factor you control Dependent variable- what you are testing/measuring/observing Experimental group- what testing group Control group- the group used for comparison Controls- What is kept constant throughout the experiment

10 Thanks for Participating!!!!!
Good luck on the test!
