Radiation Protection LS1 - Collaboration with CERN Technical Groups - Lessons learnt Stephane Bally (CERN), Sandro Di Vincenzo (CERN) Indico 382832 1

Accelerators, Experiments & Sites ▫Radiation Protection Calculation Tools ▫Radiological Area & Materials Classifications and Risk Analysis of Work Places  Experiment Site RP Support  Machine Site RP Support (CMS Forward Detectors)  IMPACT Tool Dosimetry & Calibration ▫Individual/Personal Dosimetry ▫Instrument Calibration (Measuring Devices, Operational Dosimetry) Instrumentation & Logistics ▫RAMSES  Personnel (Hand Foot Monitor), Material and Environment Monitors Radioactive Waste ▫Analytic Laboratory (Spectrometry Service) ▫Shipping of radioactive material (Import/Export and CERN sites)  TREC Tool ▫Radioactive Sources Service ▫Storage of Radioactive Material Industrial Radiographies Radiation Protection (DGS-RP) Group Indico 382832 2

Comments – Positive and Negative Calculation Tools ▫Simulations are globally confirmed by in-situ Measurements during LS1 ▫Newly 2-step method for open/closed configuration and shielding scenario for next maintenance periods ▫Communicate better towards Detector/Service teams ▫Invest more time in Work Plan optimization (Risk Analysis) with team supervisor/members Area & Material Classifications and Risk Analysis ▫Reduced to local and well known areas (Beam pipe vicinity, Castor and HF small radius region) during LS1 ▫Invest more Survey Map reporting and Improve on-site Perimeter Identification ▫Higher Product and Work Breakdown Structure details on submitted Work Plan/Package is required to assess risk and apply more efficiently the ALARA principle Experiment Site RP Support ▫Quick response time, flexible to adapt to planning change and well know P5 safety awareness ▫Presence on critical Machining interventions (giving recommendation, and supervision) ▫Improve supply of protective equipment and material on machining task (controls and training to be included) Machine Site RP Support ▫Positive as above, but difficulties on efficiency for forward detector teams (limited resources, external institutes) Indico 382832 3

Comments – Positive and Negative IMPACT Tool ▫Synchronized with CMS ACT and CMS Access System during LS1 ▫In used by CERN Operational Dosimetry Service, Radioactive Waste Services and CERN Equipment Groups ▫Require learning curve from CMS collaborators Individual/Personal Dosimetry ▫Manual Switch On/Off and use on user demand and dose record via control room shifter ▫Possible as well using IMPACT and Dosimetry Service Readers ▫Double dosimetry (National + CERN) for external firms required (to be planned in advance) ▫Dosimeter issues to be announced and treated by Dosimetry Service Instrument Calibration ▫Measuring Devices no major problem found during LS1 ▫Operational Dosimeters (Low Battery exchange time to time) RAMSES ▫Personnel, Material and Environment Monitors no major problem found Analytic Laboratory ▫Efficient and rapid analysis (depends on work load and inter-site transport) Indico 382832 4

Comments – Positive and Negative Waste Management ▫Under estimated quantities announced (majority of non-radioactive) ▫On-demand RP material control by DGS/RP technician, adapt to our work load ▫Non satisfactory material sorting for RP control ▫Provide container for large objects as well as easy access to plastic bags (promote local waste collection at working places) Shipping ▫Efficient response time (require process time (multi-services) according to safety rules) ▫TREC tools deployed during LS1 (SIR training course shall be requested for buffer zone access) Radioactive Source Service ▫Treated directly between Requester and Source Service ▫RSO systematically informed by Source Inventory Tool (should be coordinate with other activities at TC meeting) Storage of radioactive material ▫Temporary storage (short term) allowed at P5 during maintenance activities ▫Shall be packed on palette and send to GS/RP facilities (Prevessin site) for longer storage period Indico 382832 5

Comments – Positive and Negative Industrial Radiographies ▫Well informed about P5 infrastructure and activities coordination unit ▫Safety Officers and Planning Officer being now systematically informed Visit Services ▫Large success during LS1 ▫Co-activity conflict and incident hardly predictable, depend on field supervision and task progress (create off-visit pathway and/or time slots) Indico 382832 6

Other observations relevant for future shutdowns Space Management ▫Shall be addressed at early stage from Project Proposal ▫Plans for radioactive storage, logistics and waste management shall be drafted Product Management ▫Shall be continuously documented from design to disposal, through manufacturing, installation and maintenance phases Resource Management ▫Work activity resources (human, material and time) shall be timely scheduled including the Quality Planning, Work Execution and Quality Control Information Management ▫Collect information on work procedure and product specification around a common data repository structure ▫Avoid duplication, promote references, apply change management process and define document categories Indico 382832 7

Conclusions Safety ▫Continue Best Practices (Training, Safety Officer) ▫Stay Informed (Safety start with us) ▫Share Experience (Collaborate and Document) Quality ▫Plan, Do, Check and Act ▫Think Global, Act Locally ▫Continuously Improve (Knowledge Management) Schedule ▫Objectives vs Resources ▫Define and Adjust Indico 382832 8
