3 Thousands of years ago the moving and melting of glaciers formed the Great Lakes.

4 A prairie is a landform covered mostly with grasses and flowers.

5 Drought means a long period with little or no rain.

6 Iron ore is a plentiful mineral in the Midwest region.

7 Sioux Indians adapted to living on the Great Plains by moving from place to place following herds of buffalo.

8 Most settlers used sod to build their homes on the Great Plains.

9 Migration means a movement of people from one place to another.

10 Railroads were important to the growth of the Great Plains because they provided an easier way for settlers to reach the Midwest.

11 Chicago, Illinois connected ten major railroad lines in the mid 1800’s.

12 An entrepreneur is a person who starts a new business.

13 Henry Ford was an inventor who helped set up an assembly line in Detroit.

14 Mass production is the process in which a product is made more quickly and cheaply by using machines.

17 Full sentence answers: Each of these questions needs to be answered in a well written sentence. Use the words from the sentences to help begin your answer.

18 In what ways do tornadoes affect the Midwest? Tornadoes affect the Midwest by destroying everything in the tornadoes path. The Midwest gets about 300 tornadoes every year.

19 What were 3 ways in which Native Americans of the Great Plains used the buffalo? Native Americans of the Great Plains used the buffalo for many uses. They ate the meat and used the hide for clothing. They also used the bones and horns to make tools.

20 How did Henry ford change the automobile industry? Henry Ford changed the automobile industry by introducing the assembly line and the use of interchangeable parts.

21 Essay Answer: An essay must have a minimum of 2 sentences. The first sentence is a topic sentence (a topic sentence does not begin with it, because, or and). The second sentence and any additional sentences should give more details to help and support the topic sentence. Write out a draft answer first, using your book to get facts. Have someone sit down and review your answer. Then write your final copy.

22 Why did Detroit, Michigan, become the center of the nation’s automobile industry? Detroit Michigan became the center of the nations automobile industry for a few reasons. Detroit is located on the Great Lakes which is great for shipping raw materials and finished products easier. Also, there are many steel mills nearby to help with the supply needed to make cars.
