2 First, Introductions O Who am I? (and why should you listen to me?) O Associate professor, School of Teacher Education and Leadership (STEL), early childhood special education—20 years in classroom, 11 years at RU O Who are you (and why do you want to listen to me)? O Education majors? O Other majors? O Why are you teaching UNIV 100? O Most important take-away from today?

3 Agenda O Classroom management → O The first class: Making connections O The second (and all other classes) engagement (meaningful) pacing O Handling disruptions; too quiet O Instruction O Strategies: discussion, activities, lesson plans (activities)

4 1. Making Connections O The First Day of Class (Maryellen Weimer, PhD) O 1. Introduce the course: connections O 2. What they will do better after taking the class O 3. Commitment to their learning (and their commitment to their own learning) --song O 4. Build relationships O 5. Ignore façade—get them involved with content O 6. Smile, have a good time! (if you are bored…?)

5 Activity: Plan for First Day O In groups, develop plan for first day: (10 minutes) O Use ideas from previous slide: O How can you facilitate making connections (common interests, shared experiences) between you and students, and among students? O What activity? Questions? Etc.

6 2. Classroom Policies O Establish classroom atmosphere: O In groups: Rules/policies for class? (5 min) O Respect O Confidentiality—why? O Rules? (class-developed) O Cell phone policy?

7 3. Keep It Meaningful O What helps you engage/stay interested? O Turn to neighbor, share O Share with group O Anecdotes, activities, visuals/online work, ‘games’ (review)—let them develop it! O Meaningful—what is the one most important thing you want to take away with you from this workshop?

9 Handling Disruptions O Prevention: O Attention when appropriate O Pacing, interest level, respect O Ignore disruptions if possible O Stop and wait O Use humor O Peer pressure (fun activity if we can finish…) O Meet with student after class—befriend; give responsibility

10 Too Quiet? O RPI’s what might you do? (What worked last year?) O Strategies? O Think/pair/share O Individual writing task, then some share O Let students come up with activity they want to do, etc. CHOICES O If interested/engaged, what most likely to happen?

11 Instruction O How do you like class to go? ‘talking head’? O Group activities O Visual O Online O Assignments: how? O Assign students to teach part of lesson O Don’t just lecture! O “I do, we do, you do” (new skills/content) O Think/pair/share

12 Discussions O Everyone loves to talk about him/herself O Think, Pair, Share O Small group discussions—clear purpose O If small, ensure time for large group report back O Discussion board on D2L

17 Planning for Lessons O If teaching, need to plan O Brief introduction to lesson plan, then practice O RPI lesson plan from last year O My suggested lesson plan O Sample lesson plan

18 Activity: O In your groups, plan a lesson for any topic in the syllabus: identify a strategy (T/P/S, whole class discussion, group work, etc.), and complete form: plan what you will say, time for each section, etc. O Suggestions for topics: O Study skills (choose ONE) O Protocol for communicating with instructors O Time management O Stress reduction O Etc.
