4. This is a copyrighted trademark. It must always appear in red coloring.

5. An Army is defined by it’s uniform. As an act of membership and recruitment into the war against Satan, Salvationists wear a uniform. On the uniform are “insignia.” The insignia tell you who and what the soldier is in the “ranks.” Everyone begins (and continues) as a SOLDIER.

6. Blue epaulets on the shoulder and a blue patch with “S” on the chest Band & Songster add white piping on the epaulet. Corps names may be attached to the epaulet. Some soldiers become CADETS

7. Blue epaulets with one or two cross bars on the epaulet and a blue patch with “S” on the chest. One cross bar signifies first year of a two year training. Two cross bars signify the second year of a two year training. A cadet is commissioned as an OFFICER

8. Red epaulets on the shoulder and a patch with “S” on the chest. The insignia on the officer red epaulet will tell you their rank.

9. A non-commissioned officer who works for The Salvation Army in a ministry position. Wears blue epaulet with Envoy insignia on it. No requirement on the number of years of service.

10. The rank of Lieutenant is now given to officers who have completed two years of the training program and been commissioned as a Salvation Army Officer. Lieutenants are under a 5 year probationary period in the field before receiving the rank of Captain. A lieutenant’s epaulet is red with one star.

11. The rank of Captain is received upon completion of the 5 year probationary period as a lieutenant. An officer remains a Captain until their 15th year of service. A captain’s epaulet is red with two stars.

12. This is a “field” commission represented by plain red epaulets. The A/Captain has the full rights of officership. After successfully completing 7 years, the A/Captain can receive full status as a Captain, wearing two stars on the epaulets.

13. An officer receives the rank of Major after completing 15 years of service. This is represented as a silver crest on their red epaulet. All officers will hold this rank into retirement unless they are appointed to a staff position and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

14. A Lt. Colonel has a crest and silver piping around the red epaulet. A “full” Colonel has silver piping around the epaulet, chest patch and shield on the hat/cap.

15. Only those promoted by the General hold the rank of Commissioner. This rank is reserved for Territorial Commanders and high ranking positions at International Headquarters. This is represented by maroon velvet epaulet with silver trim and crest.

16. There is only one active General in the world. This is represented by maroon velvet epaulets with gold trim and crest. This rank comes with election of the High Council. If the General is a married man, his wife holds her own rank of Commissioner. As a couple, the General and his wife are referred to as “The General and Commissioner.”
