2 OBJECTIVES OF THIS LESSON n To teach cadets to recognize naval officers by the various emblems and devices worn on their uniforms. n To teach cadets to understand the various pay grades and ranks of naval officers.

3 METHODS OF IDENTIFYING OFFICERS n NAVAL OFFICERS ARE EASILY IDENTIFIED BY THE MARKINGS ON THEIR UNIFORMS. n THE RANKS ARE DEPICTED BY : u STRIPES ON THE SLEEVES u VARIOUS METAL DEVICES WORN ON THE COLLAR. u SHOULDER BOARDS ON SOME UNIFORMS.

4 OFFICER SLEEVE INSIGNIA STRIPES OF VARIOUS SIZES ARE USED TO DEPICT OFFICER RANKS. THESE STRIPES ARE USED ON: n SHOULDER BOARDS n SLEEVES OF SOME UNIFORMS THE SIZE AND NUMBER DEPEND ON THE RANK. EXAMPLE-CAPTAIN IS SIGNIFIED BY FOUR 1/2 INCH STRIPES. 2 INCH STRIPES 1/2 INCH STRIPES 1/4 INCH STRIPES (CAPTAIN)

5 OFFICER SLEEVE INSIGNIA (CONT) RANK STRIPES ARE GOLD ON ALL SLEEVES AND SHOULDER BOARDS.

7 OTHER METHODS OF DEPICTING RANK n METAL DEVICES SIMILAR TO OTHER MILITARY SERVICES ARE ALSO USED ON NAVAL OFFICER UNIFORMS. THESE DEVICES ARE ALWAYS SILVER OR GOLD IN COLOR

8 PAY GRADES n THE VARIOUS RANKS ARE OFTEN REFERRED TO BY THEIR PAY GRADE. n A PAY GRADE INDICATES THE PAY THAT AN OFFICER RECEIVES FOR THAT RANK. n THE HIGHER THE RANK, THE HIGHER THE PAY GRADE.

11 FOLLOWING ARE THE NAVY RANKS AND THE VARIOUS METHODS OF IDENTIFICATION. THE GOLD STRIPES, COLLAR DEVICE, PAY GRADE AND ABBREVIATED TITLE ARE SHOWN FOR EACH RANK.

13 ENSIGN NEW NAVY OFFICERS ARE COMMISSIONED AS ENSIGNS. THE PAY GRADE FOR ENSIGN IS 0-1. THE ABBREVIATION FOR ENSIGN IS ENS.

14 LIEUTENANT (JUNIOR GRADE) ENSIGNS ARE SELECTED FOR PROMOTION TO LIEUTENANT (JG). THE PAY GRADE FOR LIEUTENANT (JG ) IS 0-2. THE ABBREVIATED TITLE IS LTJG.

15 LIEUTENANT LIEUTENANT IS PAY GRADE 0-3. THE ABBREVIATED TITLE IS LT.

16 LIEUTENANT COMMANDER LIEUTENANT COMMANDERS ARE THE MOST SENIOR OF THE “JUNIOR” OFFICERS. THE PAY GRADE IS 0-4. ABBREVIATION LCDR.

17 COMMANDER COMMANDERS ARE “SENIOR” OFFICERS. THE PAY GRADE IS 0-5. ABBREVIATIONCDR. SILVER

18 CAPTAIN CAPTAINS ARE ALSO “SENIOR” OFFICERS. THE PAY GRADE IS O-6. THE ABBREVIATION FOR CAPTAIN IS CAPT. THE TERM “CAPTAIN” IS ALSO USED TO IDENTIFY A SHIP’S COMMANDING OFFICER

19 REAR ADMIRAL (LOWER HALF) ALL ADMIRALS ARE “FLAG” OFFICERS. A REAR ADMIRAL LOWER HALF WAS ONCE KNOWN AS “COMMODORE”. THE PAY GRADE IS 0-7. THE ABBREVIATED TITLE IS RADM (L).

20 REAR ADMIRAL (UPPER HALF) REAR ADMIRAL UPPER HALF IS KNOWN AS A REAR ADMIRAL. PAY GRADE IS 0-8. THE ABBREVIATED TITLE IS RADM (U).

21 VICE ADMIRAL VICE ADMIRAL IS IN PAY GRADE 0-9. THE ABBREVIATED TITLE FOR THIS FLAG OFFICER IS VADM.

22 ADMIRAL CURRENTLY, THE HIGHEST CURRENTLY, THE HIGHEST FLAG OFFICER IS KNOWN SIMPLY AS ADMIRAL. ADMIRAL IS PAY GRADE ABBREVIATED TITLE ADM.
