2 T EAMWORK Work WITH each other, not AGAINST each other. Teams work best when everyone pulls in the same direction. Cooperation is more productive than competition. Fighting your teammates brings you both down. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree. Be constructive, not destructive. Don’t tear each other down, just continue moving forward. 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved

3 T EAMWORK Everybody has a job to do. Know your role. What are you supposed to be doing? Follow the chain of command. Who is in charge? Is it you or someone else? If it’s someone else- let them lead the way! Master your craft. Become excellent at what you do- you will be appreciated by your teammates when they know you will do your part really well. Focus on each others’ strengths, not weaknesses. Not everyone is good at the same thing- what comes easily to you may be very difficult for someone else. 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. 4 T EAMWORK Do you volunteer to do something or do you get told to do something? You either get delegated or you volunteer. Delegation : The leader assigns you your role. Structured and Formal Volunteering : You let the leader know you want to do it. Informal 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved

5 T EAMWORK Types of Leaders There are many styles of leadership, but here are some of the most common: Autocratic Make the project decisions without consulting their team. Democratic Allow team members to provide input during development of project. Laissez-faire Don’t interfere and allow the team members to make the decisions. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved

6 T EAMWORK Own up to your own work! Everyone must take responsibility for their role. Start out by talking through the problem. Make sure you have all the supplies you need. Remember your objective. Leader needs to guide the production process. Team Members need to contribute and stay on task. Praise each other and give credit where credit is due. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. The Leader of your group will lead the discussion. After that time, your group may NO LONGER TALK! You will have 6 minutes to build your bridge- IN SILENCE! Act your roles! You are either a leader or a follower. 9 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved
