Photo Writing An Invitation to Write

Photo Writing is… A break from the normal, structured essay A way for us to be creative even if we don’t consider ourselves “creative writers.” An activity that allows us to interpret photos. An escape from our world for a little while. An activity that allows us to share/collaborate with others. While I ask for volunteers, I hope more and more will share as the year goes on. I will ask you to turn these in from time to time and they are up for grabs on any notebook check.

What to Do Simply put, this is writing that is created out of a photo that you have viewed/interpreted. Photos help to represent a story. What can you create from the photo? What thoughts, people, places come to mind? What is the story? You can write a poem, a song, a rap, a short story, an explanation/interpretation of what you think is taking place or took place right before, who the person(s) are and what’s going on in his/her life. The sky’s the limit here, but it must be something you create out of the photo; hence, photo writing Write a minimum of ONE FULL PAGE.

Desperate Thoughts

I am lost, alone… I am scared. It’s getting chilly. I’m not prepared. The silence could be a good sign; a peaceful sign. Droplets of dew delicately land upon my face. My clothing begins to dampen. A NOISE! A branch? A footstep? UUUUUuuuuuhhh! Really?! No. I don’t want anything bad to happen. NO! I can’t handle anything bad to happen! How could I be lost? How could I have not figured out how to get back to where I was? A scream stops in my throat until I think I am going to break into a hysterical mess. This cannot happen! Breathe! Breathe! Breathe… Hhhhhhhmmmmm Slow down, calm down. It must not be anything. Why should it be? It could have just been a normal noise for this forest. In some ways it feels peaceful, almost comforting. Why should I believe anything bad or horrible would happen? Is it from the stories we read and tell to each other that we automatically coil at being lost? Maybe I should keep breathing. Deep breaths. Yes, breathing is good. That works. Get oxygen into my brain. The sun is beginning to reach into the fog. Bright spots began to appear. I’m going to be alright. I’m going to be alright. Relax… breathe… yes, I can figure this out. Where is the brightest spot? East. Yes, east. Go that way. Move, think, breathe. Journal Entry #1 Date 8-27-15 Desperate Thoughts
