2 Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) Group of trained student interns who promote sexual health at Cal by providing accurate, nonjudgmental information. University Health Services, Tang Center, Health Promotion Unit Sponsored Program 2014 Interns

3 Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) Based on a public health model, our target audience includes all Cal students, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, and level of sexual knowledge or experience. 4 Weekly Seminar Interns meet with staff coordinator for a mandatory 2- hour class on sexual health issues and receive Public Health units Class is held Tuesday evenings 3-5PM in the Class of ‘42 room at Tang Seminar focuses on continuing education and further preparation for outreach, social media, and major events

5 SHEP Outreach (Workshops and Tabling) Icebreakers, games, and activities are an important part of SHEP workshops and help keep them fun, engaging, and interactive. Interactive games Discussion Lecture Demonstrations Outreaches are tailored to fit the needs of the requesting group.

6 SHEP Workshop Topics Sexual debuts – definitions of virginity; deciding when to become sexually active; mechanics of sex; role of hormones; negotiating sex. Safer sex – review various safer sex methods – commercial and DIY; communication skills including consent Healthy relationships – types of relationships; negotiating sex; characteristics of healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships; communication; dealing with conflict/break ups. Sexual pleasure – overview of pleasure physiology, sexual arousal; importance of lube, toys and other aids to enhance sexual experience. Intro to sexual health – brief summary of reproductive and pleasure physiology; self-tests like testicular and breast exams; STI testing - when and why to get tested. STIs/HIV – common STIs including modes of transmission, possible symptoms, testing options, and treatment. Negotiating safer sex and sexual safety – Content to be developed with incoming group!!!

8 Random Acts of Sexiness Distribute a predetermined number of condoms or safer sex kits to the Cal community You choose: – Date and time – Location Write blog with photo of you in action!

10 Support and Promote Student leaders lead the program aspects below and your support and promotion will be important to the success of: Sexpert Education Clinic and HIV Testing Sex 101: Topics in Sexual Health DeCal Program and Event Planning You may apply to be a student leader after 1 successful semester as a peer!

11 Experience: you will gain valuable experience in public speaking, facilitating, teaching, and health education Knowledge: you will learn a lot about sexual health, and get to apply that knowledge as an intern Community service: you will provide an important service to your fellow Cal students Social interaction: you will get to know other peer educators who share your interest in sexual health Units: you can earn up to 2 units per semester Certificate Option: Students who complete all levels of the program may earn a SEXPERT certificate!

12 Who Should Apply? We accept applications from all UC Berkeley students. Students of all undergraduate years and majors are welcome to apply. While you don’t need any prior knowledge of sexual health to be selected as an intern, a base level knowledge will be helpful. We encourage students of diverse backgrounds and experiences to apply. **To apply, you must be able to commit to all of the program components previously discussed.

13 Application Available online on UHS SHEP page, FaceBook page, and SHEP Talk Blog Applications are due by 5PM on Monday, August 31st Application has questions regarding general background data (name, major, etc.) as well as essay response questions Accepted students notified by 5PM Friday, September 4 th.
