JA@UT DISCUSSION @ TWENTSEWELLE JANUARY 13, 2015

JA@UT – PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE QUESTION  What is the role of JA@UT as stated in our charter?  Outreach – explaining, engaging the public in Science  Give advice to the Management team (also unsolicited).  Meeting colleagues from different disciplines  Outreach internally – new students, colleagues, current students.  Initiate things or projects?

JA@UT – MISSION AND OBJECTIVES 1) Achieve the following for young researchers (outside of JA@UT?!) a) Support their development b) Introduce them to excellent research in and outside their own field of study c) Engage them to possibility of multidisciplinary research d) Engage them to excellence in an international environment e) Engage them to education (creating enthusiasm for scientific education/research) f) Engage them to entrepreneurship 2) Ambassadors of excellence in research, actively involve the UT in activities for the general public 3) Give solicited and unsolicited advice to UMT on strategic issues.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES OF JA@UT  Mentor master TGS students, and/or PhD students and Post- docs  Help in Grant courses, share knowledge  Give opinion on science and maybe science within the university / foresight studies – open data? Maybe the role of the university (what is the difference from hogeschool etc.)  Give interdisciplinary point of view on some subject/areas  Get to know other people from other institutes  Do more on educational excellence. (discuss educational formats, not structures like TOM).  Guidance of honors/ATLAS students with multidisciplinary projects + idea of Tatiana to work with graduating students

DEBATE A formal debate regarding the proposition: “The JA@UT should be open to all young scientists of the UT who are motivated to promote the goal of the JA@UT” resulted in the conclusion that the selection criteria should be reconsidered. For example, formulate an admission criterion per faculty to have a more balanced mix of members.

-Not a duty/obligation, but a natural contribution from a passionate researcher. Though some see it as a duty, as part of their job (for instance to introduce their education program to potential students). -The university should facilitate outreach, through: - A list of (relevant) target groups, the topics they might be interested in and channels through which they can be reached. - Researchers amongst each (for instance within JA@UT) other might be able to use each others networks/channels -Manchester as a good example of how our university could contribute to outreach (lectures, general public, science museum) -It’s hard to say how much time outreach consumes (estimation 5% of one FTE) -Outreach is important, but not everybody has the right qualities for it. 6 IT IS THE DUTY OF EVERY RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY TO PARTICIPATE IN OUTREACH

-Not a clear portfolio, although a lot is happening (fragmented, uncoordinated and not always communicated well). -There is an expert database which could be used for outreach. A list of good performers, including topics and maybe short movies of earlier performances (such as DWDD). -Studium Generale has specific target group, maybe the UT could create a “Studium Generale Light” for the general public (short talks in a bar, museum etc.) -Outreach is important, but a general question is what goals we have with it (and therefore at which target group we are aiming) -Suggestions to add to the portfolio: collaborating with Science on Tour, organize our own activities on a Saturday in the centre of a town in the region. 7 THE UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE HAS A AN EXCELLENT PORTFOLIO OF OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

-Internet, including social media, can be complementary -A nice example is competition of the “20 sec. movies of MIRA/MESA+.” If this becomes a success, other faculties could also use it. -The UT-website is relevant. Dutch, English and German should be interesting, accessible and up to date. 8 OUTREACH VIA THE INTERNET WILL REPLACE MORE TRADITIONAL OUTREACH

-JA@UT as an “extra brand” is confusing for the outside world. -JA@UT is an internal label, function as an internal network. 9 THE JA@UT SHOULD CONTRIBUTE TO BOTH OUTREACH AND VALORIZATION
