Network Traffic Analysis Small timescale analysis –Microseconds to 1 hour –Stationary assumption –Primary focus: scaling properties –Primary use: performance analysis Delay / Queue length distribution, buffer overflow prob Long timescale analysis –1 hour to months or more –Dominated by nonstationarity –Primary use: network engineering, anomaly detection, capacity planning

Stationarity Traffic engineering operates over timescales at which traffic is strongly nonstationary But much related work on estimation problems has focused on the stationary setting For network management problems, we need to analyze stationary and nonstationary traffic components simultaneously

Long Timescale Traffic

What are the components of traffic variability? Deterministic or predictable trends -Linear trends -Cyclic variation (diurnal, etc) -Noise -fractional Gaussian noise -Bursts -alpha traffic

Other Current Interests -Coordinate systems for the Internet -Precise geolocation via network measurement x 2 = (-2,5,3) x 1 = (3,2,4) d ||x 1 -x 2 || d
