METALS properties

To start with Can you list some general uses of metals and why they are an appropriate choice for it.

Topics to be studied Reaction with dilute acids Reaction with oxygen Reaction with water or steam Reduction of their oxides with carbon Action of heat on the hydroxides, carbonates and nitrates of K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe and Cu. 8 USES OF METALS

Aluminum – Used in the manufacture of aircraft because of high strength and low density. Used in making food containers as it is resistant to corrosion. Copper – used for making electrical wires as it’s a good conductor of electricity. Used for making utensils as it’s a good conductor of heat Zinc - Used for galvanizing Used for making alloys such as brass Iron – Used for making steel and stainless steel which are widely used in the manufacturing industry.

PROJECT WORK

TASK ROLE AUDIEN CE FORMATTASK Docume ntary movie makers/ performe rs Middle school students A documentary movie (15-20 mins) To make a documentary movie covering all the points listed under the header ‘project objective’ for any “one” of the either element (i.E. Either iron, zinc or aluminum) In groups of four or five create a documentary movie of length 15- 20 minutes. Covering all the points listed under the header ‘ Project Objective ’ for any “ One ” element (i.e. either iron, zinc or aluminum). TO SIMPLIFY

Scoring instructions: It is suggested that you read the marking rubric well to gain an understanding of the marking criteria and work like wise. Marks will be deducted for inappropriate use of language, body gestures, outfits etc. A total of two marks will be deducted for late submission. A total of two marks will be deducted for exceeding the time limit. Project Objective: Outline the process of  extraction of iron from hematite and its further conversion into steel  extraction of zinc from zinc blende  Aluminum extraction, including the role of crayolite and the reactions at the electrodes. Know the uses of the Iron/Zinc/Aluminum and their alloys. Highlight Environmental and Social Impacts of Mining and Ore Processing.  Impact on water, air and soil quality  Social (Cultural and Aesthetic ) values  Climate change considerations Suggest feasible alternatives to any two negative impacts. Instructions for submission: The final submission should comprise of  The movie on a pen drive and a cd  The script for the entire movie (along with credits, the members of the group and bibliography of all the sources used)
