The Robbins Nest By: Aryssa Burrs, Kate Carr, Courtney King

Wind Farm  Definition: A power plant that uses wind turbines to generate electricity  How It Works:  The winds turn the blades  The blades turn a shaft, which turns a gear box  This turns a generator faster than just a shaft would  This gets the electrons moving  Which makes electricity http://www1.eere.energy.gov/windandhydro/wind_how.html

Wind Farm Cont. Large Wind Farms can hold several hundred individual turbines Smaller Wind Farms usually hold only a few turbines to power one specific need such as a factory or farm. http://vimeo.com/13759005

Living Roof Living Roof  Definition: A roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium planted over a waterproof membrane.  They provide insulation, collect rainwater, provide habitat for wildlife, and they lower urban air temperatures.  They are low maintenance and increase the life span of the roof. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_roof

Living Roof Cont. Extensive Green Roofs have a lighter layer of vegetation, and require less maintenance. Intensive Green Roofs have thicker vegetation and require more maintenance, but allow for more habitation and insulation.

Passive Solar Heating  Definition: The use of solar energy to heat a building without special equipment, such as pumps and collectors, usually through windows and skylights.  No maintenance needed, it just depends on how one structures the building.  How It Works:  Large windows facing the south with deciduous trees near them.  Thick walls on the north side.  Use double layer insulated windows so that the sun comes in through the window, and then gets trapped in the building.  Position the overhangs so that the summer sun is blocked out and the winter sun is trapped in.  Ventilation so that the unwanted air can escape. http://www.azsolarcenter.org/tech-science/solar-architecture/passive-solar-design-manual/passive-solar-design-manual- heating.html

Passive Solar Heating Cont.

Composting Toilet  Definition: An aerobic processing system that treats excreta, typically with no water or small volumes of flush water, via composting or managed aerobic decomposition.  They are an alternative to wastewater treatment plants  They alleviate having to use water to flush  How It Works:  Fungi break down the waste to 10 to 30 percent of its original size  This creates humus which is then used as part of fertilizer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Composting_toilet

Composting Toilet Cont. Practically looks like a normal toilet!

CFL Light Bulbs  Compact Florescent Lamp  These bulbs use less energy than incandescent bulbs and have a longer life span.  They are more expensive up front, but save you money in the end, due to their sustainability and the effects on your energy bill.  They have the same amount of visible light as incandescent bulbs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp

CFL Light Bulbs Cont. One CFL light bulb has the life span of NINE incandescent bulbs.

Motion-Sensored Faucet  No wasting water while brushing teeth!  Ideal for bathrooms, commercial or residential, since it saves water by automatically turning on when it senses a hand, or, off when one’s hands are removed  Ideal for bathrooms, commercial or residential, since it saves water by automatically turning on when it senses a hand, or, off when one’s hands are removed  It eliminates the spread of germs since there are no handles to contaminate. there are no handles to contaminate.  It’s perfect for children or those who have limited use of their hands have limited use of their hands (ADA compliant). (ADA compliant). http://www.greenstrides.com/2009/01/27/motion-activated-faucets-save-water/
