3 NHS Walk-in Centres NHS Walk-in Centres 42 centres established: Location convenient for the public Opening times that suit modern lifestyles Nurse-led service delivering core range of services A complementary service to General Practice Partnership working with GPs, GP OOH services, NHS Direct and A&E Departments The Walk-in Centres have seen over 4 million patients since opening EXISTING WICS

4 In addition several existing Wics are developing satellite sites and outreach clinics providing a less full service. Of these: –The Manchester satellite service in Wythenshawe town centre is set to become fully operational early this year –The new Southampton Bitterne satellite will become fully operational in April. –Some WiCs also provide outreach clinics in the community EXISTING WICS NHS Walk-in Centres

5 NHS Walk-in Centres New WiCs On 22 July 2003 Health Minister John Hutton announced a further £40m capital investment in new centres over three years to develop more WiCs - Potentially bigger role to play in reducing pressure on primary care services meeting the health needs of the local population Increased focus on their local contribution to national targets 24/48 hr Primary Care Access reducing 4 hour wait for treatment of minor injuries in A&E Provide patients with a choice of where they can access services - particularly for the working population DEMONSTRATOR WICS

6 NHS Walk-in Centres NHS Walk-in Centres DEMONSTRATOR WICS Guildford Crawley Redhill Redbridge Leytonstone Hackney Highgate Hill North Finchley Lewisham Teddington Maidstone 11 new NHS walk-in centres were announced on 22July A further 11 walk-in centres were announced on the 5th January Brighton Lewisham Darlington Barking and Dangenham Skelmersdale Colchester Huntingdon Prestwich Salford Gateshead Sunderland More will follow in 2005/6

7 WiCs are situated in convenient locations that allow the local population quick and easy access to a range of NHS services. For example Birmingham NHS Walk-in centre which is located in Boots The Chemists flagship High Street store in the City Centre shopping area. As part of their LIFT schemes - PCTs may want to consider development of an NHS WiC within Sports Centres or Football Stadiums to maximise access to the public. LOCATION OF WICS NHS Walk-in Centres
