5 Common Spoken English Errors
What is the mistake in these sentences? India has his own culture and traditions. USA sent his soldiers to attack and kill Osama Bin Laden. Mistake is in the usage of ‘his’ for ownership pronoun of countries. We use its or their for ownership pronoun of countries. Hindi: India apna PM har paanch saal bad chunti hai. English: India selects its/her PM after every five years. For ‘apna’ when the subject is a country use its or her. The reason for this is that we can either see our country as our mother land and so we can treat it as a female and use ‘she’ Or we can treat it as a non-living thing and use ‘it’. The only exception to this rule is Germany which is ‘he’. Correct sentence 1: India has her/its own culture...... Correct sentence 2: USA sent her/its soldiers to
