1 2 nd 9 weeks Review

2 As Chief of State the President is the symbol for the American people. If the President and Vice President both die the Speaker of the House becomes President. If no presidential candidate wins the majority of the electoral votes then the House of Representatives The President receives his powers from the Constitution.

3 There is 15 Cabinet departments. Even though the President gets to appoint (pick) the people in the cabinets, it is Senatorial Courtesy that the senate goes with their choices. The Attorney General is the head of the Justice Department. The National Security council’s job is to advise the President about what is going on in the nation and the nation’s safety.

4 A progressive tax increases as your income increases. A tax return is money that you get back if you paid too much in taxes. Public debt is ALL of the money that is owed by ALL of the Federal Government. The president can send troops without Congress’s approval for up to 60 days

5 A period of détente was when the US withdrew from the Vietnam War. Alliances, membership in the United Nations and providing aid to other countries are all tools that the USA uses with foreign policy. The United Nations is an international organization that works together to maintain world peace.

6 The 1 st amendment protects your freedom of assembly. The 14 th amendment extends the protections of the Bill of Rights to the States. Civil liberties are freedoms that are guaranteed to all people. The dissenting opinion of the Supreme Court explains the reasons why they disagreed with the majority opinion. The plaintiff in a court case brings the case to a court.

7 Expressed powers are powers that are specifically stated the in the constitution. Gerrymandering is when the district lines are redrawn to give an advantage to one political party. The number of representatives each state has in the house is recalculated every ten years. The person in charge in the House is the Speaker of the House.

8 A floor leader is in charge of getting members to vote for the bill that they are trying to pass. The senate must approve all of the people that the president appoints to an office. The commerce power is the power to regulate businesses and trading among the nation. A pocket veto takes place when congress’ session is ending, (10 days before)
