MOTORWIND ® A RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT International Patent Number # FR2005/0503404

MOTORWIND ® A process created and developed in Hong Kong....

THE PEOPLE Inventor, patent holder and developer: Mr. LUCIEN GAMBAROTA Representative: Mr.

THE PEOPLE Lucien Gambarota: inventor of the motorwind, is currently based in Hong Kong where he carries on his work on the motorwind and other renewable energy projects! MR Lucien is also working on the implementation of his technology with Hong Kong electrical companies.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dr. Dennis Leung Dennis Y. C. Leung received his B.Sc. (Eng.) in 1982 and Ph.D. in 1988 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the University of Hong Kong. After obtaining his Ph.D., he worked for the Hong Kong Electric Co. Ltd. as an Environmental Engineer. He returned to the HKU in 1993 as a lecturer and course coordinator of environmental engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor with expertise in air pollution control, dispersion modeling and energy conversion. Dr. Leung is a chartered and registered professional engineer, a fellow of IMechE, Institute of Energy and HK Institute of Acoustic, and a corporate member of HKIE. He is the past Chairman of the Institute of Energy (HK Branch), an editor of the HKIE Transactions, and a regional editor of the Journal of Global Environmental Engineering. SINCE 2006, Dr. Dennis Leung AND Dr. Michael Leung, FROM THE HONG KONG UNIVERSITY, LEADING EXPERTS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY, HAVE SUPPORTED AND WORKED ON THE MOTORWIND ®

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dr. Michael Leung Dr. Michael Leung received his B.Sc. from Oregon State University in 1990, M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1992 and 1995, respectively. He subsequently conducted full-time research as a Post-Doctoral Associate at the University of Florida and as a Research Associate at the University of Hong Kong. Between 1997 and 1999, he served as the Energy Conservation Manager in Cable & Wireless HKT. He then joined the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management at the City University of Hong Kong as a Lecturer for two years. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong in 2002. His research interests include indoor air quality, energy efficiency, and heat transfer.

THE MOTORWIND ® - INTRODUCTION Born in the year 2005, The Motorwind ® is a totally new technology, still at the experimental stage. In view of the first presentations, the Hong Kong University decided to fund the project and opened a research program to get more accurate data and theorize the process.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE Wind turbine technology is very mature and very well documented. There is many companies manufacturing wind turbines and there is already many sites exploiting wind energy. All wind turbines use the same design China has the objective of producing 30 000 MW by the year 2020 using wind turbines

HOW MUCH ENERGY CAN WE GET FROM WIND? Pe = ½ D 2 x V 3 x E in watts example if D = 30 meters V= 10m/s E= 20% average Pe = 90 KW. In the above equation, D represents the diameter in meters, V represents the wind speed in meters /second and E represents the efficiency.

WHERE ARE WE TODAY? WIND ENERGY IS STILL VERY EXPENSIVE IN TERMS OF INITIAL CAPITAL INVESTMENT. NATURAL GAS POWER PLANT : 500 TO 600 US$ PER KW WIND ENERGY : 1500 US$ PER KW THE OTHER PROBLEM IS THE EFFICIENCY. WIND TURBINES NEED WINDS OF AT LEAST 10 M/S TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY AND THEY HAVE TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR WINDS OVER 30 M/S. THE AVERAGE EFFICIENCY AROUND THE WORLD IS ABOUT 20% WITH A TOP IN TASMANIA WITH A 40% EFFICIENCY. SO THE PROBLEM IS QUITE SIMPLE TO MAKE WIND TURBINES MORE ATTRACTIVES : BE CHEAPER AND MORE EFFICIENT

TO ANSWER A) MANUFACTURING PRICE. SINCE THE TECHNOLOGY USED FOR MANUFACTURING WIND TURBINE IS CLOSE TO AERONAUTIQUE,MASS PRODUCTION TECHNICS CAN NOT BE USED. B) DUE TO THE ACTUAL DESIGN AND WIND ENERGY AVAILABLE THE EFFICIENCY CAN NOT BE IMPROVED. We have therefore tried to solve this problem by changing the size and design. A) the actual design of wind turbine uses the two or three blade propeller because of the speed involved and weight limit. The propeller design is the most suitable for high speed tip.(like a airplane propeller )but perform very badly for low speed. The multi blade design (8 to 12 blades) performs very well if the rotating speed is kept low B) the best size for a mass production by injection machine is about 0.50 m

One turbine (clockwise)

Yellow turbines rotate clockwise and green turbine anti clockwise

Based on that design we can collect energy from winds as low as 1 or 2 m/s. the efficiency increases to about 70 % (instead of 20%). the assembling and maintenance is very low. If there is a problem with one of the turbine we just replace it. The production cost of one turbine is only about 4 US$. We can build complete walls of turbines of any shapes. For the same power as an actual wind turbine the manufacturing cost of a “turbine wall “ is about 20 times lower. Due to the space between two turbines, the frame holding the turbines can deform giving a great flexibility. Energy can be collected on any part of the “ turbine wall “. turbines can be injected in different materials and colors (including transparent ).

By using different colors we can create a new media

Since we are currently investing all our resources in our new wave energy technology we did not proceed yet with the MOTORWIND project. We just need to make the molds and start real scale testing. The estimated cost is around 2 million HK$. We are interested to find a partner who can help us to develop this technology. The business potential of our technology is extremely high because we can power also very small units like individual housing and at a cost that poor countries can afford. Collaboration with United Nation or World Bank or third world countries government could be very productive.
