1 If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other as well.
How should you understand these Bible quotes ? If someone strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other as well. What is it called when someone takes these quotes at face value ie to mean exactly what the words say? How would it be if you took them “literally”? On the seventh day, God rested. Do not hide your light under a tub

2 Interpreting the Bible
Explain what interpreting something literally means. Give an example of taking something literally. **Explain why taking something literally might not be the best way to interpret it. To know what interpreting something “literally” means TO understand 3 ways a Bible text can be misinterpreted To evaluate what the true meaning of a Bible text should be

3 Can the Bible be misinterpreted ?
1. Match the pictures to the quote 2. Which interpretations (in yellow) are taking it literally? 1. “God created the world in seven days….and saw that it was good” Genesis Ch. 1. This means that the Bible explains how the world was made. 2. “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.” Jesus saying, in Mt 5:30. This means I should amputate my hand if I ever steal anything. 3. “A woman dishonours her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this is the same as shaving her head”. 1 Cor 11:5. This means that all women should always wear a veil in Church. How could these quotes COULD be interpreted, in a NON-literal way ? Open your envelope. Use the information in it to explain how these quotes could be interpreted non-literally. ***Illustrate your answers.

4 H/W: YOUR VERSION Find your own bible quote.
Explain what a LITERAL intepretion would be like. Explain how you could understand this quote non-literally Which interpretation do you prefer and why?

5 Dialogue of the Deaf This person can only understand a Bible quote literally.. you can’t see how words can mean something other than they say… This person is trying to persuade them to understand the quote non-literally…but it’s proving difficult! It’s not science: The Bible not about HOW things are made. The Point is.... The Bible teaches describes exactly how the world was made in a scientific way. Eg “God created the world in seven days….and saw that it was good” Gen1.
