 @username – Your Twitter identity, username, or account. Strategy Note : Choose as short a username as you can, to save characters  When you want to Mention (tag) somebody in your Tweet, refer to them by, or at least be sure to include, their @username (e.g. @heidil_edc, check out this link!) Strategy Tip : Mentioning relevant, large organizations on Twitter is a great way to gain followers!  Retweet (RT) – “The act of sharing another user's Tweet to all of your followers by clicking on the Retweet button.” “RT” will come at the front of your Tweet. Based on The Twitter GlossaryThe Twitter Glossary

 When you Modify a Tweet (vs. straight Retweeting), put MT at the front of the Tweet and be sure to include the original poster’s @Username so they’ll be notified. Strategy Tip: Modifying helps you tailor the info to your target audience if needed.  When you Reply to a Tweet, the @username will appear at the front of the Tweet so they’ll get notified of the reply. Note that replies are public – like “Reply All” in email. [Did you see the movie Chef?]

 Follow – Click on the Follow button of a Twitter account to a Twitter account to subscribe to their posts. (Meaning, their posts will now appear on your home stream.) Strategy Tip: Following somebody gets their attention. They may in turn check out your profile and Follow you back. Sometimes Twitter accounts are set to automatically follow new followers. This is not advised! First, it seems bogus, and second, you never know who will decide to follow you. Etiquette Note : When somebody follows you, some users reply with a Thanks for Following!

 Favorite – Click on the Favorite button to bookmark a Tweet because you like it and want to find it again easily. They’ll also do it to notify their Followers of an important Tweet. Posters are notified when you favorite their Tweets. Strategy Tip : People / businesses like it when you Favorite their Tweets, and it’s a way to call attention to your Twitter feed. They may Follow you in return if they like what they see!

 A # hashtag is “any word or phrase immediately preceded by the # symbol. When you click on a hashtag, you'll see other Tweets containing the same keyword or topic.” (e.g. #WinterWC14) Strategy Tip : Including hashtags of relevant, large topics is a way to gain followers!  #FF (“Follow Friday) suggests that people Follow this account/@username Strategy Tip : Could help attract attention to your account.

 Home is your “real-time stream of Tweets from those you follow.”  List – List you create of Twitter users around a particular theme. Lists can be personal or public. You designate who is in your list. You do not have to follow those in your list. Strategy Tip: Great way to watch your competition!  Use Direct Messages to have private conversations with people you follow who also follow you.

 Pinned Tweets – “You can pin a Tweet to the top of your profile page to keep something important to you above the flow of time-ordered Tweets.” Strategy Tip: Good for businesses as a way to add a bit more info about the business right up front.

 140 Characters, including spaces  “http://” doesn’t count toward the character limit.  Shorten your URLs with http://bit.ly or http://ow.lyhttp://bit.ly http://ow.ly  You can take out vowels, but you’ll see that the most frequent Tweeters use whole words.  Twitter is often used for passing along a link. However, give context as to why we should visit the link!
