DEAD BALL (and other topics) The A.D.D. segment of the Camp (can discuss further at 1:10 session)

Where we typically get involved:  Helmets  When helmets come off Give me 3 situations  (4.2.2k runner; 9.6.4g helmet off a player; 9.4.3l hitting the player who lost his helmet)  Pregame; observing teams Identify These Now!  Pads  Towels  Knees covered  Braces  Casts  Eye shade  Play cards  Communication devices

Where we typically get involved:  Ball  Properly inflated  NFHS logo  Wilson balls for Regional play and Playoffs  Kicking tee  Pliable material  Lowest point of the ball no more than 2 inches off the ground  Game clock and play clock  Ensure proper functioning

 Kickoff  Fair Catch  Awarded Fair Catch  Touchback  Safety  Try  For the start of each series using an overtime procedure

 A free kick shall be made from any point between the inbounds lines and on K’s free kick line.  Once designated, K must kick from that spot. Talk to the Kicker!!! Avoid Problems. 2015 Changes!!

 The captain may choose to free kick or snap anywhere between the inbounds lines on the yard line through the spot of the fair catch.  This choice remains if a dead ball foul prior to the down, or a foul or inadvertent whistle occurs and the down is replayed.

BJ FJ SJ R L LJ U BJ LJ R U L And if an R Player Gives a Fair Catch Signal Other Than The Player Who Actually Catches The Ball? See 6.5.3

 Before the ready to play signal, A may designate the spot from which the ball is put in play anywhere between the inbound lines.  A team has the same privilege if the down is replayed or a dead ball foul occurs.

 A free kick shall be made from any point between the inbounds lines and on K’s free kick line.  A punt may be used for a free kick following a safety. If Punted, the Ball Must be Kicked Within 1 step Behind K’s Free Kick Line 6.1.2

 After a touchdown, the scoring team shall attempt a try during which the ball is snapped from a spot designated by A anywhere between the inbounds lines on B’s 3-yard line, unless moved by penalty.

 To start the overtime, the offensive team shall put the ball in play, first and goal, on the defensive team’s 10-yard line or succeeding spot if carry-over penalty has been administered anywhere between the inbounds lines.

 Before Coin Toss  Time-outs  Between Quarters  Halftime  Second Half  Extending Periods

 BJ Responsible for having Visiting Team captains on the sideline  Opposite press box  Remain at 50 (on the sideline)  SJ/FJ keep players off the field  (3.2.2 and 9.8.1g 1)

 BJ Responsible for 45 second whistle and 60 second notification.  Side Judge has this responsibility on 7 man crew  Important/key event!  Be aware of the game situation  How many time outs does each team have remaining? Do your crew members agree?  Continue monitoring; look professional; not a social event (but it could be time to talk to crew members if there is an issue) Pay Attention; Look Where You’re Supposed to!! What’s on your Game Card?

 Keep time during intermission  Home team may try to manipulate the clock  Inform Head coach at 5 minute mark to return to field  Make eye contact with him  Don’t let the Assistant coaches or others pass the word along  Stay there and give more alerts if necessary  Get His Choice for Second Half

 Teams on the field before end of intermission  Have captains ready for 2 nd half choices immediately following the 3-minute warmup period  The captains are to have the entire 3 minutes  Don’t “hang out” at the 50 to give the impression you are waiting for them; wait till the 3 minute warm up period is over before you move to the 50  Assume Star Formation on the field at end of 3 minute warm up period has ended  Teams should then be ready in their kickoff positions

 Foul by either team and penalty accepted (except 3.3.4b)  Only if time expires during the down 3.3.3  Double foul  Inadvertent whistle  Touchdown scored; try is attempted

 Defense fouls during successful try/field goal and offended team accepts results of the play with enforcement on succeeding spot  3.3.4b  Unsportsmanlike fouls  Nonplayer fouls  Fouls with a loss of down  Fouls enforced on subsequent kickoff  Fouls when enforced, result in a safety

 Dead ball or live ball  Dead=after a down has ended and before ball is next snapped or free kicked  Live=during a down  Never combined to determine Double Foul  Simultaneous with the snap  Deep 3 role?  Clock; enforcement; down; crew responsibility  Flagrant  Places an opponent in danger of serious injury; Excessive? Pages 92-93  And/or Persistently vulgar or abusive  Ejection

 Double  Live ball fouls by each team during same down  Other than nonplayer and unsportsmanlike  Offset; replay the down  “Clean hands” provision  Multiple  More than one live ball foul by the same team during the same down  Offended team gets the choice  Unsportsmanlike  2 by same team member or coach Ejection  Be sure to communicate that amongst the crew What’s on your Game Card?

Post-scrimmage kick foul – A foul by R  During a scrimmage kick play (other than try or successful field goal)  Ball crosses the expanded neutral zone  The foul is beyond the expanded neutral zone  The foul is before the kick ends  K will not be next to put the ball in play

Loss of down:  Illegal handing the ball forward  Illegal forward pass  Illegal touching of forward pass by an ineligible player  Forward pass interference Automatic first down:  Roughing the kicker or holder  Roughing the passer  Roughing the snapper  Forward Pass Interference

 Free Kick out of bounds untouched by R  5 yards and rekick  Spot where the ball went out of bounds  25 yards from previous spot ( know where that is )  Kick catching interference  15 yards and rekick  Result of the play  Awarded fair catch after enforcement of 15 yard penalty from spot of the foul

 Successful try; foul by A with a loss of down  No score and no replay  Successful try; foul by B/R  Accept the penalty and replay  Accept result and enforce from succeeding spot  Unsuccessful try  By A/K; obviously declined by B/R  By B/R; replay after enforcement or decline distance and replay from previous spot  Successful Field Goal; foul by R  Accept penalty and replay  Accept result of the play and enforce from succeeding spot

 Touchdown; no change of possession  Enforce on the try  Or subsequent kickoff  Touchdown; change of possession  Foul occurs after change of possession  Scoring team can accept results and  Enforce on the try  Or subsequent kickoff

 3 minute intermission  Timeouts do not carry over  Penalties do  Coin toss just like starting the game  Winner can choose offense, defense, or end of field  Each team gets 1 timeout

 Touchdown; no change of possession  Enforce on the try  Or subsequent kickoff  Touchdown; change of possession  Foul occurs after change of possession  Scoring team can accept results and  Enforce on the try  Or subsequent kickoff Ball is Dead When B Gains Possession There is no subsequent kickoff in Overtime Rule 8.2.3,4, &5 say subsequent kickoff Accepted Penalty either on the try; or decline

Overtime (cont)  Each team shall have a series  Ball becomes dead when B obtains possession  The line to gain is the goal line  Allow additional series until a winner is determined

 Fundamentals:  Possession of a live ball in the opponent’s end zone is always a touchdown  Player inbounds; ball penetrates vertical plane of the goal line (and goal line extended) = Touchdown  Try…only A can score on a try  Field goal  Place kick or drop kick from a scrimmage formation  Or free kick following fair catch or awarded fair catch  Cannot touch K or the ground before passing through the goal  Must be between the uprights (inside edges) and uprights extended  Safety

Field Goal/Try Position: Beyond end zone and behind upright where you feel most comfortable and have the best coverage of the upright. Proper Positioning

Looks Good!

No Good: NFHS 8.4.1c Same Kick

 Injured Player  What do we do?  What don’t we do?  Bleeding Player (page 100 of the rule book)  When can he continue playing?  Bloody uniform?  Unconscious Player  Concussion signs (page 98)  Protocol?

 Weather  Lightning (page 101)  Delays (when is the latest you can resume play?)  Fights  Sideline control  Start recording numbers
