Practice-The Periodic Table TEKS 8.5C interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements TEKS 8.5B identify that protons determine an element’s identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including reactivity

The modern periodic table was created by Russian chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev.

Elements are represented on the Periodic Table with chemical symbols. Si Na Fe O C He

The elements are arranged from left to right based on their atomic number.

The atomic number comes from the number of protons present in stable atoms of that element.

Protons determine the element’s identity!!

Here is the structure of the Periodic Table…

Columns

The columns on the Table are called groups. The groups are numbered from 1-18.

Elements within a group have very similar properties. Find this symbol on your Periodic Table: GROUPS

Draw an arrow to show the direction of the groups on the Periodic Table! Which way to the groups go?

VERTICAL

Periods

The rows on the Periodic Table have meaning as well.

The rows are called periods. Left to right is the (period)

Next to the periods, draw an arrow to show the direction of the periods.

Across any period, the properties of elements gradually change. For example, as you move from left to right across the table, atoms tend to become smaller in size, but larger in mass.

HORIZONTAL Which way do the periods go?

KEY Notice the box at the top of the Periodic Table. This is a key that tells us what all of the symbols and numbers mean. 14 Si 28.068 Silicon

Do the following on your key on your Periodic Table. Atomic number -Circle Atomic number -Circle Name = chemical symbol = element symbol-Highlight Name = chemical symbol = element symbol-Highlight Atomic mass- Box Atomic mass- Box

Elements are classified into three large groups on the Periodic Table. The groups are …… Major Groups

Metals On the left and bottom

Non Metals On the Right

Metalloids in the Middle along the solid line

Application: Using the Periodic Table in your Journal Color the three groups on your Periodic Table and make a key. Metals=blue Metals=blue Nonmetals=green Nonmetals=green Metalloids=yellow Metalloids=yellow

No colore No Color Blue 1-12 and bottom 2 Along jagged line Yellow On Right Green 14-18
