4 Practice-The Periodic Table
TEKS 8.5C interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, to explain how properties are used to classify elements TEKS 8.5B identify that protons determine an element’s identity and valence electrons determine its chemical properties, including reactivity

5 The modern periodic table was created by Russian chemist, Dmitri Mendeleev.

6 Elements are represented on the Periodic Table with chemical symbols.
Si Elements are represented on the Periodic Table with chemical symbols. O Na He C Fe

7 The elements are arranged from left to right based on their atomic number.

8 The atomic number comes from the number of protons present in stable atoms of that element.

9 Protons determine the element’s identity!!

10 Here is the structure of the Periodic Table…

11 Columns

12 The columns on the Table are called groups
The columns on the Table are called groups. The groups are numbered from 1-18.

13 Elements within a group have very similar properties.
Make this symbol on your Periodic Table: GROUPS

14 Draw an arrow to show the direction of the groups on the Periodic Table!
Which way to the groups go?

15 VERTICAL

16 Periods

17 The rows on the Periodic Table have meaning as well.

18 The rows are called periods.
Left to right is the (period)

19 Next to the periods, draw an arrow to show the direction of the periods.

20 Across any period, the properties of elements gradually change
Across any period, the properties of elements gradually change. For example, as you move from left to right across the table, atoms tend to become smaller in size, but larger in mass.

21 Which way do the periods go?
HORIZONTAL

22 KEY Notice the box at the top of the Periodic Table. This is a key that tells us what all of the symbols and numbers mean. 14 Si 28.068 Silicon

23 Do the following on your key on your Periodic Table.
Atomic number -Circle Name = chemical symbol = element symbol-Highlight Atomic mass- Box

24 Major Groups Elements are classified into three large groups on the Periodic Table. The groups are ……

25 Metals On the left and bottom

26 Non Metals On the Right

27 Metalloids in the Middle along the solid line

28 Metals = blue Nonmetals = green Metalloids = yellow
Application: Using the Periodic Table in your Journal Color the three groups on your Periodic Table and make a key. Metals = blue Nonmetals = green Metalloids = yellow

29 Blue 1-12 and bottom 2 Use Page 62 in 8th grade book for example
On Right Green No colore No Color Blue and bottom 2 Along jagged line Yellow Use Page 62 in 8th grade book for example
