WELCOME TO NGSS AND Correlating LA, Math, Science, and Engineering!

Core Content designed to move the study of Science into the “future” and connect students to field of Engineering, which develops science concepts for life enhancement.

NGSS have 3 intertwined dimensions:  Practices  Crosscutting Concepts  Core Ideas

What is the difference between Science & Engineering? Science is the study of the natural world. Engineering is the application of math and science to create something of value from our natural resources. But, they cannot be neatly separated. Both are needed to develop products and to advance society.

Fundamental Crosscutting Concepts 1.Length and length-related parameters 2.Time and time-related parameters 3.Mass and mass-related parameters 4.Force and force-related parameters 5.Temperature and temperature-related parameters 6.Electric current and related parameters 7.Energy and power and related parameters

 Two ideas we want to share:  Sample of unpacking Standards  Some activities that support cross curricular connections with math/science/engineering

MS. Structure, Function, and Information Processing 08-PS3-1. Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on descriptive relationships between kinetic energy and mass separately from kinetic energy and speed. Examples could include riding a bicycle at different speeds, rolling different sizes of rocks downhill, and getting hit by a whiffle ball versus a tennis ball.] Science & Engineering Practices Disciplinary Core IdeasCross Cutting Concepts Analyzing & Interpreting Data Analyzing data in 6–8 builds on K–5 and progresses to extending quantitative analysis to investigations, distinguishing between correlation and causation, and basic statistical techniques of data and error analysis. § Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to identify linear and nonlinear relationships. (08-PS3-1) PS3.A: Definitions of Energy § Motion energy is properly called kinetic energy; it is proportional to the mass of the moving object and grows with the square of its speed. (08-PS3-1) Scale, Proportion, and Quantity § Proportional relationships (e.g. speed as the ratio of distance traveled to time taken) among different types of quantities provide information about the magnitude of properties and processes. (08-PS3-1),(07- PS3-4) Connections to other DCI’s in the grade band: MS.PS1.A (07-PS3-4); MS.PS1.B (07-PS3-3); MS.PS2.A (08-PS3-1),(07-PS3-4),(07-PS3-5); MS.ESS2.A (07-PS3-3); MS.ESS2.C (07- PS3-3),(07-PS3-4); MS.ESS2.D (07-PS3-3),(07-PS3-4); MS.ESS3.D (07-PS3-4) Articulation to DCI’s across grade- bands: Articulation across grade-bands: 4.PS3.B (08-PS3-1),(07-PS3-3); 4.PS3.C (07-PS3-4),(07-PS3-5); HS.PS1.B (07-PS3-4); HS.PS2.B (07-PS3-2); HS.PS3.A (08-PS3-1),(07-PS3- 4),(07-PS3-5); HS.PS3.B (08-PS3-1),(07-PS3-2),(07-PS3-3),(07-PS3-4),(07-PS3-5); HS.PS3.C (07-PS3-2) Common Core State Standards Connections: ELA/Literacy – RST.6-8.1 - Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts, attending to the precise details of explanations or descriptions (08-PS3-1),(07- PS3- 5) Student Target: “I can calculate speed and velocity.” “I can explain the relationship between force, motion, and mass.” Essential Vocabulary/Skills: speed, velocity, momentum, mass, kinetic energy, force

Assessment Samples: CREATE YOUR TEST/ASSESSMENT PRIOR TO LESSON PLANNING AND INSTRUCTION – LET THIS GUIDE YOU WITH YOUR PLANNING You will receive a an email with a copy of the NGSS in a Word document to help with your unpacking needs. You still may have to manipulate the size, etc. to get to desired size, etc. Sunni, who has been attending the Science Network, will be working with elementary teachers to start this process. Adjust as needed to fit your grade level standards.

Jan, Sondra, and I recently attended the 2 week Science/Math/Engineering seminar at MSU. We are going to share example activities with you to demonstrate connections between LA, math, science, and engineering. We will also be emailing these activities and other links to you as well. If you have questions PLEASE contact one of the four of us. Let me know if you have trouble opening files. Please make sure you completed our email list. Thanks

Integrating Science/Math with Reading/Writing Fiction Picture Books Informational Articles Nonfiction

HANDOUT IDEAS Picture books – Create math problems that relate to the book such as Esio Trot Nonfiction books – Create math problems that relate to the book such as Full Body Burden Nonfiction books – Create argumentative writings based on the science issues raised in the book (corporate rights vs individual rights) Informational Articles – Create math problems related to the science topic such as the Tardigrades article Fiction books – Create argumentative/informational writings based on the science issues raised in the book such as The Bar Code Tattoo

Aluminum Foil Boat This activity can be adapted for just about any grade level and can be made as complex as you want as you see by the handout. It connects math, science, and engineering all in one activity. Students are engaged in higher ordering thinking and in analyzing.

Orbits and Earth’s Crust Orbits activity provides students with Solar system, math, and engineering (model construction) experiences. Reading About Materials in the Earth’s Crust provides students with LA, science, and Math experiences. Older students can be given the data and construct their on pie charts; the younger students can color code the charts.

Be on the look out for the emails with these activities and more plus the NGSS on WORD. Please contact any of us for help. Unpacking: Sunni Ogg & Resanda Robertson Cross-curricular Activities: Jan Strickland, Sondra Lawton, or Resanda Robertson

Thank You Have a GREAT school year!
