1 Spanish Holidays Second part Michelle Dios, Sergio Martínez & Raquel Romero

2 SAN FERMÍN From July 6th to 14th every year the word festival is written in capital letters in Pamplona. The Sanfermines have arrived. The festival is celebrated in honor of San Fermin, patron saint of Navarra, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years.

3 ➔ MORE ABOUT SANFERMINES They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls. When the chupinazo (ceremonial rocket) is fired the city explodes into life. Thousands of people from all over the world descend on the city, with dresses up in red and white. For nine days the streets turn into a feast of friendship, joy, music and non-stop partying.

4 SANTIAGO DAY It is a Bank Holiday celebrated the 25th of July. This day we remember the apostle James (Santiago in Spanish), who is the Patron of Spain. Saint James went to Spain to preach the Gospel. His tomb was found on the 9th century, in that place was built a Cathedral. The city takes his name: “Santiago de Compostela”. Pilgrims from all over the world arrive at this cathedral, which is the end of the St. James´ Way.

5 ➔ SAINT JAMES´ WAY Every year thousands of pilgrims take a bag and a few things and begin an adventure trying to arrive in Santiago, where the apostle´s tomb is. There are several routes, which start from a lot of points. The most famous one starts in Saint Jean Pied de Port in the French Basque Country. It goes along the Spanish meseta and its length is 780 km. Every pilgrim has a reason to do it. Some people go through it for religious reasons and others to find themselves.

6 COLOMBUS DAY On the 12th of October we celebrate the national day. We remember Christopher Colombus´arrival in the Americas. Colombus arrived in Caribe when he was trying to go to India by a different way because he thought that the Earth was round. As it is the national day there is a military parade in Madrid. We celebrate something else this day; the feast day of Our Lady of the Pilar, which is one of the most important Virgins in Spain.

7 ALL SAINT’S DAY The 1 st of November we celebrate the “All Saint’s Day”. This is to remember all people that has arrive at the heaven. We usually go to the cemetery and we use to put in our relative’s tomb flowers and we pray for them.

8 ➔ TYPICAL FOOD In “All Saint’s Day” it is very typical to eat some sweets: ❖ Los buñuelos de viento. ❖ Los huesos de santo. ❖ Panellets. Buñuelos de viento Huesos de santo Panellets

9 CONSTITUTION DAY Constitution Day (Día de la Constitución) marks the anniversary of a referendum held in Spain, on December 6, 1978. In this referendum, a new constitution was approved. This was an important step in Spain’s transition to becoming a constitutional monarchy and democracy.

10 ➔ PUBLIC LIFE, BACKGROUND, SYMBOLS... ● Constitution Day is a national public holiday. It’s a quiet day off work for most people. They spend time at home with the loved ones and close friends. ● Francisco Franco was a dictator, the head of state in Spain. After his death, Spain needed a new constitution, so according to such need, it was approved by 88 percent of the people of Spain. ● Physical representations of the Spanish Constitution are important symbols of Constitution Day. An original copy signed by the King Juan Carlos I, is in the building of the Spanish Congress of Deputies.

12 LA INMACULADA Two days after the Constitucion Day, the 8 th of December we celebrate Inmaculada’s day. We celebrate the day of Spain patron saint, although is more popular Pilar’s Virgin. The Pope Clemente XIII this virgin our patron saint. We celebrate in this day because it’s nine months earlier than Maria’s Virgin birthday.

13 ➔ WHAT DO WE USUALLY DO? In this days, spanish families used to decorate their houses with Christmas things: putting the tree, the nativity scene...
