1 The European Day of Languages

2 HISTORY The European Day of Languages is celebrated on 26 September, as proclaimed by the Council of Europe on 6th December 2001. Its aim is to encourage language learning across Europe.

3 Objectives The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are to: alert the public to the importance of language learning and diversify the range of languages learned in order to increase intercultural understanding; promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe; encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school. In keeping with these rules, people, young and old, are encouraged to take up a language, or take special pride in their existing language skills.

4 Celebration at school On the occasion of the day, on 26th September our school celebrated the anniversary of the European Day of Languages. The group of students prepared a short festivity to commemorate this day.

5 Our students:  Sang numerous songs in French, Spanish and English languages including the performance of school’s band playing songs of The Beatels’

6  Prepared food typical of some european countries (e.g. tortilla de patatas, croissants, pizza, tiramisu cake, greek salad)

7  Pupils of the school theatre club acted in Macbeth, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare.

8  The group of students prepared the quiz about european languages

9  The students prepared poems in different languages, which were presented to the viewers. The biggest attractions were the poems in Dutch and Yiddish language, which is thought to be almost forgotten language deriving from Indo-european languages.
