None HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! None WELCOME GUESTS Kathy Poe Receives Teacher Of The Year Award Teacher Of The Year Award Julia Steffen From Best Buddies Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to- one friendships and integrated employment. Congratulations to Kathy Poe. She is an exceptional Math and Science teacher at Fletcher Middle School. Last week President Jim Lee and the school principal presented Kathy with our Kiwanis Club Teacher Of The Year Award. K-Kids is a Kiwanis-sponsored service club for students in elementary schools. Each K-Kids club is a local project of its sponsoring Kiwanis club, and there is no district or International K-Kids structure. The K-Kids program was officially adopted by Kiwanis International in 1998. KIWANIS EDUCATION SPOT My brothers and sisters in Kiwanis, The Deerwood Kiwanis Club based at Deer Creek Country Club is pleased to welcome a new member transferring from the Kiwanis Club of Colombo City in Sri Lanka. Patrick Harrigan will be presenting our program on June 30th. We will have a remarkable opportunity to learn about the Kiwanis Visions of Hope Project serving Tsunami affected children on the east coast of Sri Lanka. This innovative project was judged to be the Best Service Project by a Kiwanis Nation at last year's annual Asia-Pacific Kiwanis conference in Jakarta. Patrick was forced to leave Sri Lanka and arrived to take up residence in the Baymeadows area just last month and now lives and works in Jacksonville. This article in yesterday's Times of London offers a prelude to Patrick's story: "Aid workers forced to leave Sri Lanka under strict new visa rules" http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6418015.ece This article documents the difficulties that charities and service organizations including Kiwanis face to operate in Sri Lanka today, particularly when they are serving minorities, Tamils most especially. Even the Kiwanis Club of Colombo City seems to be paralyzed out of concern that they might be seen to be helping Tamil children in a former conflict area. Please come and hear the engaging story of how Kiwanians have kept hope alive in a Sri Lankan village that suffered 1,711 fatalities from the Tsunami of 26th December 2004. Here is web site of project: www.navashakti.orgwww.navashakti.org Hope to see you on the 30th of June at Deercreek at 12 noon. Paul Halter President of Kiwanis of Deerwood meeting for lunch on Tuesday's at Deer Creek Country Club Good afternoon Division 5, We are now in the time period that reviewing the Distinguished Club status should be done so it can be accomplished by your club for 2008-09. As I have said before, it would be GREAT if all 8 clubs in Division 5 could receive The Distinguished Club honor as well as have each club president and secretary be recognized as Distinguished Officers as well. Further, it would be excellent if we could have club members be recognized as a Distinguished Members. I know the above cannot be done without each club President and Secretary encouraging your club members to Reach Out and Reach Up. I will help you anyway I can. Lets go after it! YOU CAN DO IT!
