2. Middle School Literature  Building a Foundation  Understanding Literary Concepts  Analyzing Literature  Supporting with Text Evidence  Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry  Memorizations  Journal Writing  Class Novels

3. Building the Foundation We’ll use the interactive literary notebooks to introduce terminology and practice applying it in differentiated formats. i.e. Songs, poems, movies, art, etc. This will give students an easily accessible reference for continued work in literary genres.

4. Foundation cont. Understanding Literary Concepts  Students will use the foldable to manipulate and understand literary concepts such as plot, setting, antagonist, and protagonist.  Each concept will be built upon, simplistic at first and with deeper understanding, more complex definitions and devices will be presented and applied. Analyzing Literature  We begin with simplistic Fairy Tales (Disney) and compare and contrast to the more complex Grimm.  We branch off to short stories.  Novels and text books will be used when students show confidence in analyzing basic literary concepts.

5. Foundation cont. Supporting with Text Evidence  All students are REQUIRED to support their answers with text evidence.  Text evidence builds a connection to the story that has been read and compels the student to have a deeper understanding of why they think and feel the way they do. Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry  All major genres will be covered in the interactive notebook.

6. Foundation cont. Memorizations  Students will be required to memorize various passages, poetry, and speeches throughout the year.  More than just being able to memorize we will focus on vocal delivery, proper speaking form, and body posture.  The first memorization with be a passage from The Declaration of Independence. Class Novels  Each class will have their own novel for teacher “read-a-loud” every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 10 minutes.  At the end of the novel we will watch the movie and compare and contrast the differences.  8 th – Ender’s Game by Orison Scott Card  7 th - The Neverending Story by Michael Ende  6 th – Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM by Robert C. O’Brien

7. JOURNAL WRITING Each Tuesday and Thursday students will write for 10 minutes in their journal on the specific prompt. Journals will be read and graded on accuracy with the prompt and quality of work – NOT quantity.
