8 Sustainable Elements Vegetated Buffer Section Bioswales will accept and convey stormwater runoff from the adjacent paved roadway. Low vegetation and existing soil will treat and filter contaminants from the stormwater, acting as natural filters. Bioswale Section A large rain garden will serve as an overflow area during severe storms. A slight slope will encourage flow into the garden, where plants tolerant of moist conditions will filter water as it seeps into the aquifer below.iow Images courtesy of www.portlandonline.com Rain garden Vegetated buffers will serve as separators between use areas, removing sediment, organic material, nutrients and chemicals carried in runoff or waste water.
