1. Nationalism Photo Essay By: Cheyanna Borrowman Social 20-1, Block 2 December 3 rd, 2010

2. Nationalism: National spirit or aspirations, devotion and loyalty to one’s own nation, patriotism These photos show nationalism showing in both of them, the people in are proud to be Canadian and are both showing great devotion to Canada and the Canadian teams in the Olympics.

3. The Olympics are an international event and bring many nations world- wide together in a generally, peaceful manner to compete. In this example, internationalism should be pursued because it allows countries and people of different nationalities to meet and mingle in a not political environment.

4. The G8 is an international group of 8 of the world’s most powerful and wealthy nations. They come together to discuss issues that are between their own nations or are more global concerns. This group’s membership is often a concern because it doesn't include some of the other important nations in the world like China. It seems that the G8 has a good international purpose and interest but that it needs to be updated to include more countries to pursue international interests better. Overall, the G8 is a good organization to help pursue internationalism and should continue to do so.

5. In the emblem of the UN, the olive branches are a symbol of peace that van be traced back to ancient Greece. The world map represents the area that the UN works to achieve its main purpose of peace, the global community. Thus, the UN becomes linked to internationalism in the sense that, it is a group of many of the nations of the world working together on the international stage to pursue international interests in the world.

6. A country’s goals regarding their foreign aid reflect another great example of internationalism. Many countries, such as Canada, feel that foreign aid is something that they want to and may need to pursue and thus forces them to interact internationally on the world stage as well. In this photo, we see a Canadian solder with a Afghan child while he is on the peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan, a situation where we are pursuing foreign aid with and internationalist group.

7. Revolution’s can very easily lead to international involvement and thus can become revolutionary internationalism. This is because, other countries that the revolution doesn’t directly involve, may feel that they have the right or the need to interfere on one side or the other for support. However, at the roots of a revolution it is nationalist or an ultranationalist ct because of support for one’s nations. In this sense, a revolution is an example of nationalism and a great example of this was in the French Revolution which is depicted in this photograph.

8. The Kyoto Protocol was an international agreement signed by 37 countries to work to reach set targets for reducing Green House Gas emissions. This relates to internationalism in two ways. The first, is simply because it involves many nations of the world coming together to reach their targets. The second, is that many nations either chose to ratify it or not depending on their own national interests, the most recognizable of these was the U.S. The reason for not ratifying it was mainly based on economic reason for the U.S. as well as other countries who chose not to. This picture, depicts the fact that the Kyoto Protocol is a international agreement and involves many members of the international community.

9. In this photo, we see Canadian members of DART (the Canadian Forces Disaster Assistance Response Team). They work to provide relief after a disaster in the global community,. Therefore, it is and example of Canada’s foreign aid that it provide on the international stage and thus, the internationalist views involved.

10. World vision, is a non-profit international non-governmental organization that works in the global community. Thus, by working internationally, it demonstrate internationalism and the ideas of working cooperatively with other nations.

11. The Assembly of First Nations provides a collective voice for the distinct and individual First Nation’s of Canada. Thus, although it is not on a global international level, this organization is in internationalist organization because each of the nations of people involved are interacting based on their own national interests for their First Nation’s group.
