Basic Layout & Design By: Charlena K. Vinglass

Understanding Design There are four good design principles in design: proximity, contrast, alignment and repetition. There is one thing to keep in mind…. Keep it Simple! Overusing color and just using too many graphics and images can detract from your main goal.

Proximity Proximity: Proximity is the placing of similar objects together physically and objects that aren't alike further apart (Houle, 2013).

Contrast Contrast: Contrast is the occurrence of differing elements, such as color, value, and size. It creates interest and pulls the attention toward the focal point (Houle, 2013).Think of light on dark and dark on light. However, you need to play with the color wheel to see what works best with your brochure. Most of the of time, it is best to have a light background.

Alignment Alignment: The adjustment of an object or words and pictures in relation with other objects (Houle, 2013).

Repetition Repetition: The recurrence of elements like lines, colors, fonts and font sizes, to make the piece look like it was created cohesively and not randomly. Any element that occurs is generally repeated, which often differs from the main point of interest (Houle, 2013).
