On the SECOND sheet of paper create a COLOR KEY on the right side like this. CLASS NOTES GOALS/AGENDA RAP CRITICAL THINKING VOCABULARY TIME OUT PERSONAL RESPONSE GEOGRAPHY TEST PREP PAGE CONNECTIONS World Studies Journal Name: Moore Period: COLOR KEY CONNECTION “Today we did this. I learned that. This will help me with the unit goal because.” Expected School-Wide Learning Results Academics: Higher Order Thinking Personal Qualities Citizenship Professional Development

Open your journal so that you have two blank sheets. You will always start out with two blank sides.

Always start on the left side

Write the Date and Goal & Agenda on the top half of the left side. Goals: Democracy was born in Ancient Greece and matured in Rome… Agenda:  RAP  Quick Quiz 1.1  Notes Pbj. 2 “Greece & Rome.”  Geog: “Map of Europe”  Project Obj. 2  Hw: RSG 20-4 DATE RAP: Read pages 5-9. Then do Ch.1 Sec: 1 Assessment Question #2. Make sure to write the “Transition Cloud” as it appears!

Below the Goal & Agenda do the DAILY TRANSITION activity. Goals: We live in a world plagued with problems… Agenda:  Rap  Quick Quiz 1.1  Notes Pbj. 2 “Greece & Rome.”  Geog: “Map of Europe”  Project Obj. 2  Hw: RSG 20-4 RAP: Read pages 5-9. Then do Ch.1 Sec: 1 Assessment Question #2. RAP: DATE democracy

DAILY TRANSITIONS RAPS: This stands for Review and Preview. These will generally be writing and answering questions from the board, overhead, or textbook. This is the most common. CRITICAL THINKING: These are open ended questions designed to make you think about a particular subject matter. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers to these. VOCABULARY: Vocabulary deals with specific terms from the unit that you are to pay special attention to. For each word listed you are to draw a picture that defines it, define it using words a 3rd grader could understand, and then use it correctly in a sentence.

RAP (Review and/or Preview) RAP Magna Carta: first step in democracy coming back in Europe Edward I: King that began Model Parliament Charles II: King that signed Habeas Corpus Under the Agenda, write “RAP” in blue and then answer the questions posed in the “Transition Cloud” Example: RAP Identify:  Magna Carta  Edward I  Charles II

Critical Thinking Under the Agenda write “Critical Thinking” in green and then answer the question in a complete paragraph. Critical Thinking When I hear the name “Adolf Hitler,” I think of World War II and the Nazi. That name also brings to mind the Holocaust and what happened to so many Jews. Critical Thinking: When you hear the name “Adolf Hitler,” what comes to mind?

Vocabulary Divine Right: God picks who will be king. James I was chosen by divine right. Define for a 3 rd grader Draw a picture Correctly use in a sentence

Notes always START on the right side Notes: Objective # Goals: We live in a world plagued with problems… Agenda:  Rap  Quick Quiz 1.1  Notes Pbj. 2 “Greece & Rome.”  Geog: “Map of Europe”  Project Obj. 2  Hw: RSG 20-4 RAP: choose 5 vocab words and draw a picture to represent each. RAP: DATE democracy

But notes can CARRY OVER to the left side Notes: Objective #

Writing Notes When copying notes from the overhead, make sure you indent from left to right about 2-3 inches. (using a ruler and drawing a line my help)

Create a “Input Margin” Goals: We live in a world plagued with problems… Agenda:  Rap  Quick Quiz 1.1  Notes Pbj. 2 “Greece & Rome”  Geog: “Map of Europe”  Project Obj. 2  Hw: RSG 20-4 RAP: Notes: Objective # RAP: Read pages 5-9. Then do Ch.1 Sec: 1 Assessment Question #2. democracy

Writing Notes This margin allows you space so you can write down any questions when reviewing your notes. (Extremely important!) Any information that might not appear in the overhead notes can be added here as well. This space can also be used to create “mock questions” when studying.

Writing Questions Notes: Objective # Goals: We live in a world plagued with problems… Agenda:  Rap  Quick Quiz 1.1  Notes Pbj. 2 “Greece & Rome”  Geog: “Map of Europe”  Project Obj. 2  Hw: RSG 20-4 RAP: DATE Wasn’t Socrates the guy that had to drink hemlock and die? democracy RAP: Read pages 5-9. Then do Ch.1 Sec: 1 Assessment Question #2.

After the notes immediately write out a CONNECTION Notes: Objective # CONNECTION YES! Surround the connection in a black box.

CONNECTIONS CONNECTIONS: These create a “mental connection” between what was done in class (i.e. movie, notes, presentations, tests, etc.) and the overall mastery question. These are simple statements where you summarize and explain the daily activities’ importance as it relates to the unit goals.

Use these Sentence Starters… CONNECTION “Today we did this. I learned that. This will help me with the unit goal because.”

Notes: Objective # CONNECTIONS CONNECTION Today I learned the various definitions for specific vocabulary words. This will help me with the unit goal because by understanding what each word means I will better understand the notes later on. It is only by understanding the individual objectives that I can answer the overall mastery question correctly. Also, the vocabulary objective acts as a preview for what the unit will cover over the next several weeks.

You CAN NOT start a new day on either of these spots. Notes: Objective # CONNECTION

Remember a new day begins on the LEFT SIDE

So what goes here? Notes: Objective # CONNECTION

The “FILL INS” Geography: This is a required “cut & paste”. You can put this on either the left or right side. You must have the entire map glued to the page. All maps must be colored and labeled according to the individual instructions. Time Outs: This is you taking “time out of your lives” to put something in your journal that relates to what we are learning. These can be cartoons, newspaper/magazine articles, or things downloaded of the Internet. It is important that you explain how it relates to the notes. Personal Responses: These are a way for you to communicate with me. You can use these to vent your frustration about something (or even someone) in the class, or to let me know you particularly liked something. You can even ask questions within a Personal Response, but since I only check your journals once a grading period, make sure it’s not a question that needs an immediate answer.

Such as…. Notes: Objective # CONNECTION Personal Response: Are we going to watch the movie Saving Private Ryan in this class, because it made me throw up last time I watched it?

or this… Notes: Objective # CONNECTION Time Out: This is a picture of Hammurabi’s Code. We discussed his “Eye for an eye” principle in class.

or finally this. Notes: Objective # CONNECTION Geography

The Test Prep Page is designed to make you actively study for the unit test or final. Using one page (single side) create four vertical columns, labeling them: Names, Dates, Events, and Terms. Then starting from the first objective of the unit, you read through your notes writing down all names, dates, events, and terms. For each item write a quick phrase reminding you of its significance. Each column is independent of each other. TEST PREP PAGE

NAMESDATESEVENTSTERMS Hammurabi: Babylonian King wrote first written law codes 1215: Magna Carta is signed Glorious Revolution: William and Mary become limited monarchs & sign English Bill of Rights Veto: to block a law or action

Grading A detailed rubric will be used to assess your journal grade. After you receive your first grade, make sure to go back over your journal section by section to see how you can improve it.

REMEMBER THE JOURNAL IS 10%- 20% OF YOUR OVERALL GRADE SO TAKE SOME TIME AND DO IT RIGHT! Mini-Check in 3 Days!!!
