2 Knowledge is Empowerment Let us review how to access the USU databases. Click on Student Services from the USU home page. 1. Click on library. 2. Scroll down and look for the database or source. 3. By scrolling down you will find more databases and important links. Take a moment to open all the links; they cover local, regional, national and global information. Some links will ask you for ID and passwords, others are open access or free. Now click on Nursing Reference Center (EBSCO).

4 Knowledge is Empowerment To learn all the services and information from NRC, go to “help” located in the upper right of the screen and click on the Nursing Reference Center Tutorial, listed under “Welcome” http://support.ebsco.com/training/flash_videos/NRC/NRC.html

5 Knowledge is Empowerment Have you seen the NRC tutorial? If you have not, let us check all the boxes in pink. Let us start with Diseases & Conditions.

6 Knowledge is Empowerment See example for Disease & Condition: Quick Lessons. 2. Quick Lessons: Clinically-organized nursing overviews that are designed to map the nursing workflow: Description/Etiology, Facts & Figures, Sign & Symptoms/ Clinical Presentations, Assessment, Treatment Goals, Food for Thought, Red Flags, What Do I Need to Tell the Patient/ Patient’s Family, Note, References, Reviewer (s) 1. Type “Kidney Failure” and “Browse.” Select from the results, choosing the terms that define your patient’s symptoms.

7 Knowledge is Empowerment See example for Disease & Conditions: Evidence-Based Care Sheets 2. In Evidence-Based Care Sheets determine from “What We Know” & “What We Can Do” how to proceed. Look at the date of the document. In your judgment, is it the most recent information available? 1. To start the search type “Kidney Failure,” now select “Evidence-Based Care Sheets” and click “Browse.”

8 Knowledge is Empowerment Moving on to another section, Skills & Procedures and afterwards selecting Drug Information.

9 Knowledge is Empowerment To locate a drug related to “Kidney Failure,” select “Drugs” from the document. 2. For example, click on Ketorolac Tromethamine (Systemic) 3. The results include uses, dosage and administration, alerts, stability, etc. 1. To focus on finding the appropriate drug is a key step in the procedure to determine the most suitable drug. 4. If you already know the drug’s name, type the name in the search box and “Browse.”

10 Knowledge is Empowerment Now select Patient Education and see Key Content. The E-books are under Practice Resources. Click on Diseases & Disorders 1. E- books select any book. 2. For example, type Kidney 3. To select the book chapter, click on the title.

11 Knowledge is Empowerment Let us orient ourselves to the Nursing Process “Basic Search.” For example type “Kidney Failure,” selects “Assessment” and click “Search.” 1. From results, study and learn each of the services. Next, click on “Quick Lessons” 2. Now click on “Skills”

12 Knowledge is Empowerment Select “Evidence-Based Care Sheets” and note the results. Move on and click on “Drugs.” 1. Find “Subject Major Heading “or select a drug. Click on the title Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). 2. Read description, dosage, adverse reactions, etc.
