Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him! (Luke 12:5) Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. (Acts 9:31)  Discuss What God Says About the Subject.  His Word is Final for those who Fear Him. The Word of God is THE LAW for the Christian!

Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:7-9)  Discuss What God Says About the Subject.  His Word is Final for those who Fear Him.  Remember: God Doesn’t Think Like Man!

Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage  Remember: God Doesn’t Think Like Man!  Man’s Knowledge is Limited. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. (1 Cor. 2:11-12) Human Knowledge

Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage  Discuss What God Says About the Subject.  His Word is Final for those who Fear Him.  Remember: God Doesn’t Think Like Man!  Man’s Knowledge is Limited. What Do These Facts Mean About MDR?  We Must Not Presume To Speak For God.  We Must Teach & Preach What God Says.  We Must Not Press & Bind Human Opinions.  We Should Allow Others To Have Opinions.

Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage Difference Between Commentary and Word of God  What I, or any man, says about a passage is commentary.  What the Passage says is God’s Word.  Difference between restating what the passage says and commenting on the passage.  Example: He who believes and is baptized will be saved… (Mark 16:16). Restate: Belief plus Baptism = Salvation Comment: Baptism is not essential to salvation because this passage is not contained in all the manuscripts.

Marriage – Divorce - Remarriage Difference Between Commentary and Word of God  What I, or any man, says about a passage is commentary.  What the Passage says is God’s Word.  Difference between restating what the passage says and commenting on the passage.  Example: And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery. (Matthew 19:9) Restate: Sexual immorality is the only cause for divorce and remarriage. Comment: Jesus was speaking to Jews under the Old Law and this doesn’t apply today.

Marriage: Companionship, Security, Permanent And the LORD God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” …Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:18, 24) And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6)

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in OT Law concerning adultery: The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death. (Lev. 20:10) Laws concerning virginity (Deut. 22:13-22): False charge: Man pays fine & cannot divorce. True charge: Woman is stoned to death. Law of jealousy (Num 5:11-31): True charge – wife unfaithful – Curse is upon her. False Charge – wife faithful – No curse. Law of surviving brother (Deut. 25:5-10).

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in OT Law concerning divorce: (1) When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, (2) when she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man's wife, (3) if the latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife, (4) then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before the LORD, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. (Deut. 24:1-4)

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in NT Ephesians 5:22-33 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in NT Ephesians 5:22-33 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in NT Romans 7: 1 Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives? 2 For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. 3 So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.

Marriage – Divorce – Remarriage in NT Furthermore it has been said, “Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce. But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.” (Matt. 5:31-32) And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery. (Matt. 19:9) So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” (Mark 10:11-12)
