Fractions, Decimals and Percents Mini-course Session Eight Connecting Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Objectives To celebrate the accomplishments and learning of the participants in this class. To use the number strips and Cuisenaire Rods as manipulatives for illustrating percent concepts. To reinforce the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents. To introduce participants to the NCTM Connections Standard.

Session Overview 20-30 Min Top Ten Tips for Parents and Bringing Mathematics Home 7. 3-5 Min NCTM Connections Standard. 30- 40 Min Percent Number Strip Activity 20 – 25 Min Reflection on Session One Goals 15 – 20 Min Graduation

Top Ten Tips for Parents Parents are to group themselves according to the top ten tip that they focused on during the week. e.g. Parents who focused on tip #1 should form a group. Each group should chart what they did or plan to do to implement this tip. Each group to post their chart and share their ideas.

Homework Review Participants to share their solutions to the homework Percent Problems

NCTM Connections Standard Instructional programs from pre – k through to grade 12 should enable students to: Recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas and how mathematical ideas connect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole.

Relating Fractions and Decimals to Percents Cut out the Percent Strip and label it. Tape the Percent Strip in line with the fraction and decimal strips on the same sheet from Session 6. Now consider how the display of number strips shows connections between mathematical ideas. Answer the questions on the next slide in groups.

Discussion Questions Which strips are most closely related? Why? How could these strips help you change a decimal into a percent or a percent into a decimal? How could these strips be used to help you change a fraction into a percent or a percent into a fraction?

Percent Relationships This activity will use make use of cuisenaire rods to illustrate percent relationships. If Orange is 100% then red =……% If Brown is 100% then………….= 70 % Complete the rest of BLM 49 in your groups.

Closing Activity – Looking Back I learned mathematics I interacted with my children I had fun Using your post it notes write down what you have learned over the eight weeks or what you had fun with and post the note on the chart with the appropriate heading

What does Math look like in your child's classroom? Which of the items on the list could be seen in our class today? How can you be a positive force for improving mathematics instruction in your child's school? These eight weeks have been a model of what we hope for mathematics classrooms.

Celebrate!!!!
