Unit 3 Area of Study 2 Australian Cultural Communities “The impact of globalisation on national culture”

 Globalisation is a powerful factor in influencing the way people live and interact with each other  It has both positive and negative impacts across many areas, including politics, economics, the environment, technology, and society  It involves the increase on a global scale of: ◦ Goods: clothing made in sweatshops ◦ Services: telemarketing from India ◦ Labour: low-skilled labour moving “offshore” ◦ Capital: fiscal spending to prevent recession ◦ ICT: instantaneous communication

 Read the article: Davidson, K 2010 ‘Democracy a loser in trade free-for-all’, The Age, 29 March, viewed 29 March 2010, http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/politics/democracy -a-loser-in-trade-freeforall-20100328-r536.html. http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/politics/democracy -a-loser-in-trade-freeforall-20100328-r536.html ◦ What is a free trade agreement? ◦ What key changes gave trans-national companies more power than government? ◦ How are new trade agreements undemocratic? ◦ Use a lotus diagram graphic organiser to explore the impact of US business dismantling Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, local-content rules for the media, labelling of GE food, regulation of foreign investment and government purchasing policies that support local employment.

 Immigration and emigration triggered by globalisation has had a significant impact on Australia’s national culture ◦ Immigration refers to the movement of people into a country ◦ Emigration refers to the movement of people out of a country  Australia’s economy has been supported by large numbers of temporary and permanent immigrants ◦ According to AHRC (2008), in 2007-08, 149 635 new settlers arrived in Australia from overseas ◦ In 2007-08, 56 575 people already on temporary visas were granted visas allowing them to stay permanently

 Use the graphic organiser to consider the ways in which globalisation has impacted on Australia’s national culture. ◦ Refer to the ‘Key debates on the concept of a national culture’ handout and other articles. For example: ◦ Political effects  Free Trade Agreements ◦ Economic effects ◦ Unemployment when companies move semi-skilled jobs offshore ◦ Environmental effects  Renewable energy, such as wind farms, biomass energy, or hydroelectric dams ◦ Technological effects  Infrastructural investment into broadband ◦ Social effects  Individualism, consumerism, racism, etc

 Write definitions of the following terms in your glossary: ◦ Emigration ◦ Globalisation ◦ Immigration
