This week’s ‘Thought of the Week’ ‘It is not fair to ask of others what you are unwilling to do yourself.’ Eleanor Roosevelt: Wife of US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Young Carers

A Young Carer is… …someone who is 18 or under who helps to look after a relative who has a condition such as – A disability – Illness – A mental health condition – Or drug or alcohol problem

The majority of Young Carers … … look after one of their parents or care for a brother or sister. They may also care for a grandparent or someone else in their extended family.

The difference between Young Carers and other young people who help in the home is: They are responsible for someone else on their home/family in a way that most other young people aren’t.

Young Carers and School School can be a place to forget about caring. You may not want school to know about your situation at home, But it can also be difficult to balance your caring responsibilities with your school work. But if school does not know about your situation, it will be difficult for teachers to understand if you are struggling. It’s a good idea to let a least one teacher know you are a carer.

If school knows you are a Young Carer, we can offer: Somewhere to complete homework. A listening ear. Special arrangements to help your family come to school for plays, sports fixtures and parents’ evenings. Extra time and understanding if you need it. The chance to contact home during the day if you need to.

Young Carers at Linslade We are going to survey everyone to ask if they feel they are Young Carers. Mrs Tait will then meet with anyone who says they are a Young Carer to see if they would like: – Some support in school – For us to know they are a Young Carer but keep a distance – To be allowed the chance to treat school as a chance to be normal and for us to back away – Some support out of school. We will listen to you and respect your wishes!
