10 Phonograms What are phonograms? A phonogram is a single letter, or a fixed combination of two, three or four letters, that is the symbol for one sound in a given word. English has 70 phonograms These phonograms represent the 45 basic sounds used in speaking

12 Phonograms Oral Phonogram Review What is an OPR? students and teacher are participating in the recitation of new and mastered phonograms 1 st time - teacher says the phonogram and the students repeat 2 nd time - students say the phonogram and the teacher asks clarifying questions

13 Phonograms Let’s Practice Oral Phonogram Review 1 st time – I say the sound and you repeat 2 nd time – You say the sounds and I ask you questions of where the phonogram may or may not come in a word

14 Phonograms Written Phonogram Review What is a WPR? teacher says a phonogram students write the phonogram IMMEDIATE feedback – teacher shows the answer after each phonogram is written DELAYED feedback – teacher shows the answer after all the phonograms are written

15 Phonograms Let’s Practice Written Phonogram Review I say the phonogram You write the phonogram on your paper I will give you IMMEDIATE feedback by showing you the phonogram card Please change your answer if you aren’t correct… Learn from your mistakes – don’t ignore them!

16 Spelling and Marking Always underline multi-letter phonograms Always put a small number above the phonogram when it doesn’t say it’s first sound Always write rules that apply at the end of the word Rule 4 – vowels at the end of a syllable usually say their long vowel sound Rule 17 - usually double the l, s or f at the end of a one syllable word Rule 26 – always capitalize a proper noun Rule 6 – use y not i at the end of an English word Always break the word into syllables
