 Introduction - 3 main objectives: -Kolb’s learning cycle explained -What does the cycle mean? -Demonstrate the learning cycle – Pictorial (Comprehensive and Easy Version)  Stages 1- 4 explained  Learning Styles  Example of how the Kolb’s Learning Cycle can work  One of Kolb’s Direct Quotes about learning. 2

 Kolb (1975) views learning as an integrated process with each aspect of his cycle being needed to support and feed into the next stage.  Kolb also enable the cycle to be entered into at any stage, therefore follow through the sequence of stages with the same outcome at the end of the cycle.  However, for the cycle to work effectively all 4 sections of the cycle need to be completed. 3

Effective learning is seen when a person progresses through a cycle of four stages: (1) having a concrete experience (2) observation of and reflection on that experience which leads to (3) thirdly the formation of analysis and conclusions which are then.. (4) Lastly used to test suggestion for future situations therefore resulting in new experiences learnt. 4

 Kolb explains that people are different and learn things in a different style.  So why is this..? - Social environment - A persons’ educational and capability level - Cognitive structures are the basic mental processes people use to make sense of information. 11

 Wang –studying an Accountancy programme  Fails exam  Needs to know where he is going wrong  Cannot access the information as to where he went wrong’ so therefore cannot change his behaviour  If Wang was able to use Kolb’s theory he would more than likely pass his exam. 12

“There are two goals in the experiential learning process. One is to learn the specifics of a particular subject, and the other is to learn about one’s own learning process.“ Kolb 1984 http://hlwiki.slais.ubc.ca/index.php/David_Kolb#References 13
