3 In’s & Out’s of High School Power of Options! There are LOTS of options in High School if you plan well. Check out our School Counseling Website, the Student Service Guide, See Fast Facts for Forward-looking Freshman, Other Resources & talk to your Counselor about... Course & Schedule Options!

4 Course Selection Process Rising 10th - 12th Grades THIS Course Selection Presentation! –Review course selection process, options, graduation requirements, timeline. –Course Selection Work Sheet (next slide) Enter your own courses in PowerSchool! –PowerSchool Scheduling Window Open Tues, February 24 – Sunday, March 1, 2015. –Use Any Computer w OL Access! Home, Library, Neutral Zone... –Remember CHOOSE CAREFULLY! Courses are only offered when students sign up for them. If you change your mind, there might not be space for you. Verification sheets printed from PowerSchool for parent signatures. –Verification Sheets for the courses YOU selected distributed by your 3 rd hour teacher. –You and your family should review verifications and make changes on the verification sheet, if necessary. –Return to Grade Level Office by ___________________________________ (TBD). Mistakes! –HS Counselors will review for mistakes and will correct as necessary. –Teachers will review selection and suggest corrections as necessary. –If you need changes after verification sheets are due contact your counselor in writing (e-mail preferred).

6 Course Selection Process Sign up for a Full Schedule! 6-7 hours Remember classes are offered based on what you sign up for. Not enough enrollment = class is not offered Sign up for 6-7 classes even if you are planning on Testing Out, CRs, DE, etc... We will work with you to correct schedule when results come through. 8 State of Michigan and Ann Arbor Public School Graduation Requirements Math (4.0) 1.0 credit Includes Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. Must also have math in senior year. Think HARD about Math - Which level is right for you? HS credit awarded for Algebra I and higher even if taken in MS. Be aware of course sequencing and how it affect future options. Think about your success 4 years from now... You may do “OK” now... But will you be ready for calculus in your senior year? Current Math teachers should make a recommendation for placement.

Senior Advanced Math Analysis/Pre-Calculus Calculus AP, Statistics AP, Computer Science AC Dual Enrollment w College Calc III, Differential Equations, etc... Least Difficult Most Difficult

10 State of Michigan and Ann Arbor Public School Graduation Requirements World Language (0.0 - 2.0) (2.0 credit required for class of 2016) 1.0 credit Science (3.0) Includes Biology, Physics or Chemistry, + 1 additional 1.0 Biology1.0 Elective (Earth Science, Physical Science AC or Environmental AP) 1.0 credit Chemistry or Physics If you are also strong in English classes (C or lower), Language recommended in 9th grade. If not, it is “ok” to wait until 10th grade. Class of 2016+ - HS credit awarded for language taken in MS! High School graduation requires 2 years, Some college require more! Colleges like to see consistency in language; 2-3 years or more same language. Interested in IB Diploma Programme? Requires 4 years of Language!

11 State of Michigan and Ann Arbor Public School Graduation Requirements Physical Education (1.0) Health (.5) Personal Fitness.5 (No Waivers) Health.5 “ Arts ” (1.0) (Art, Music, CTE or FCS).5 Art Music Ensembles meet the Art requirement – Choir, Band Orchestra Check in w your current Music teacher for Audition schedule Think about Course Sequencing! Many classes such as Math and World Languages follow a sequence. Course sequencing means that you may start at the level appropriate for you. Teachers usually make recommendations to students for best placement in class levels. Then, you must pass the semester before moving on to the next. Please see the spiral bound Student Services Guide for course sequencing. *You may be successful now, but how will it affect your courses as a senior?

Specialty Department Classes Advanced Placement – “AP” classes certified by College Board AC classes = Accelerated & help prepare for AP level Humanities AC – AP Tests in English, Art, & Music Health Science Technology - by application Cosmetology - by application Homebuilding - by application PLTW/Intro to Engineering - Select a full 6-7 hour day wo “special classes”. Turn in Applications to COE Office. Indicate which classes we should drop on verification sheet, if you are selected.

Music teacher will discuss high school options and audition schedules. We will adjust your schedule automatically.

16 Additional Grad Requirement Info 22 Credits total required for Graduation. Class of 2016 (w Language require) = 18.0 compulsory + 4 elective Online Learning Experience = 20 hours. Is already incorporated within your normal course work. Ie: English 9, WHAG, Biology... There is NO Community Service Requirement for High School Graduation.
