8 7LaRC -- Alan Phillips 3/7/02 LaRC Safety Organization - (Cont’d) New ESB Committees as of 2/1/02 Wind Tunnel Model Systems Committee -- provides oversight of wind tunnel model systems criteria, policies and procedures associated with the testing of models in LaRC facilities. Facility Operational Safety Assessment Committee -- provides operational oversight of maintenance and facility engineering of Center facilities.

10 9LaRC -- Alan Phillips 3/7/02 Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS) Process LaRC has a new point of contact for the LLIS -- Leslie Johnson, within the Office of Mission Assurance Gathered/Distributed new LLIS posters Disseminating messages on LLIS via @LaRC articles/LaRC Safety Highlights as appropriate OSMA representatives on LaRC Mishap Investigation Boards are responsible for putting in relevant Lessons Learned

11 10LaRC -- Alan Phillips 3/7/02 Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS) Process (Cont’d): Mission Assurance Managers are responsible for assisting program/project personnel in the use of the LLIS POC is going to publish an article on the new “push feature” of the LLIS Contracting an effort to put together a combined LLIS/GIDEP Introductory Presentation and present to Project Managers/Support Personnel

12 11LaRC -- Alan Phillips 3/7/02 Software Safety Implementation Facility Assurance Engineers (FAEs) responsible for reviewing code/ensuring interlocks in place for safety critical functions. Separation of control vs. interlock strategy is of key importance. FAE’s review systems architecture to ensure proper redundancy/other engineering safe-guards in place - - i. e., watch dog timers, fail-safe power-off relays, etc. FAE’s work with project/facility personnel to put software configuration management plans in-place for long-term control of software within the facilities

13 12LaRC -- Alan Phillips 3/7/02 Software Safety Implementation (Cont’d): Mission Assurance Managers are working with Leslie Johnson (OMA) to develop Software QA Plans for LaRC Programs/Projects Depending upon criticality of software, West Virginia IV&V Facility is being used to perform IV&V In low criticality applications, SQA is being performed in-house, monitoring contractor performance against specified plans
