Report of Liaison to ISO/IEC JTC1/SC7 James W. Moore, CSDP Liaison Representative James.W.Moore@ieee.org Prepared for Presentation to IEEE CS BOG, June 2005

6 June 20052 Highlights l ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 7, Software and Systems Engineering, is collaborating with IEEE Computer Society to make their standards collections consistent. l Currently, 28 distinct projects are underway in some form. l Four notable projects: l Vocabulary: Single shared vocabulary in publicly accessible database. l System/software life cycle process harmonization: IEEE CS proposal was accepted. l Body of Knowledge: ISO adoption of SWEBOK Guide. l Certification: A world-wide basis for certifying software engineers.

6 June 20053 Tangible Results l IEEE Std 1540, Software Risk Management, was accepted via fast-track as ISO/IEC 16085. l Shared software maintenance standard is nearing completion. l Fast-track adoption of IEEE Std 2001, Web Practices, is completed pending resolution of minor comments. l ISO publication of SWEBOK Guide will occur real soon now.

6 June 20054 Volunteer Participants l Jim Moore (lead) l Annette Reilly (documentation and vocabulary) l Tom Pigoski (maintenance) l Terry Doran (systems engineering) l Mark Henley (project management) l Cheryl Jones (measurement) l Paul Croll (assurance) l Bob Charette (risk management) l Steve Seidman (certification) l Mark Maier (architecture) l Jim Isaak (web practices) l Alain Abran, Pierre Bourque, Robert Dupuis, Claude LaPorte and others (SWEBOK Guide)

6 June 20056 The State of Harmonization … Today TopicStatusRemarks TerminologyYellow Joint project underway to adopt and revise IEEE vocabulary Product quality Yellow ISO/IEC 12119 is being improved. IEEE will adopt. Quality management Yellow IEEE is adopting ISO 9000 approach; lots of loose ends Systems engineering Yellow  Harmonization and cross-adoption of standards underway SW life cycle processes Green But some loose ends remain SW process assessment Yellow  Harmonization underway between WG7 and WG10 SW life cycle data Yellow Development of shared standard seems possible Maintenance Yellow  Project to merge IEEE and ISO standards is nearly complete MeasurementYellow Project planned for shared measurement process standard Risk management Green Configuration management Yellow SC7 withdrew its process standard; systems issues remain Project management Yellow New project to merge the incompatible standards Verification and validation Red Fundamentally different approaches; minor incompatibilities in details CASE tools Yellow Minor incompatibilities User documentation Yellow Unrelated standards; discussion underway NotationsYellow Standards describe a disjoint set of notations Safety Orange  Unrelated approaches. Study group had promising results. OthersYellow Many unrelated standards
