1 Enhancing MARC Records
Step-by-step instructions for adding a 586 tag to an existing MARC record.

2 Step 1 Step 1: Open the UnicornECOLE by SIRSI. It’s the WorkFlows icon on the desktop. 1

3 Step 2 Step 2: Enter your User ID and PIN. 2a 2b

4 Step 3 3 Step 3: Left click on the Cataloging button (8th from the left).

5 Step 4 4 Step 4: Left click on the Maintain Titles button (3rd from left in bottom row).

6 Step 5 Step 5: Type in the title of the book and click OK 1.
(Remember the book must already be cataloged into your collection.)

7 What you’ll see. This is the MARC record for the item that you want to enhance. Everything you save will become part of the permanent record. Be confident and careful. Double check your work as you proceed through the steps.

8 Step 6 Step 6: The 040 tag – Cataloging Source
This is the tag that tells who created, modified and/or enhanced a tag. Add your LC/NUC code. For example, the RCLC’s code is “|dOKeU-LI”. (The “|” is the key above enter while shifting. Be sure to check capitalization and numbers vs. letters.)

9 Step 7 7 Step 7: Put your cursor in the box with the number that comes just before 586. (This will, of course, vary. Place the cursor in what tag comes numerically just before 586.)

10 Step 8 8 Step 8: Click the 2nd button in the upper right-hand corner. It’s the one with the little green down arrow.

11 Step 9 9 Step 9: An empty tag will be inserted Type “586” into the first empty box.

12 Step 10 10 Step 10: In the 3rd box, enter the title of the award, followed by the year the award was received (i.e. Caldecott Medal, 1979; Buckeye Children’s Book Award, 2001; Outstanding Science Trade Book, 2005).

13 Step 11 11 Step 11: For items that have received multiple awards, repeat steps 7-10 for each award.
