Compensation/Benefits – Money paid and benefits provided  Salary – An annual amount of money  Hourly – Paid by the hour  Wage and Salary Scale – Range of payment  Benefits – social security, insurance, 401k  FICA – Federal Insurance Contributions Act

Employee Handbook – Explains all company policy and procedures Sexual Harassment – Any unwelcome behavior 4. 6 (8) Major Functions of HR (Cont’d) 5. Employee Performance – The manager or supervisor of each employee has responsibility for each employee’s training and performance. Job Description – A document that lists essential functions and requirements for a job. Tipped Employee – An employee who works for tips Wage – The amount the of money that a person is paid per hour. Temporary Worker – A worker who is hired by a business for a short amount of time.

7 (8) Major Functions of HR (Cont’d) 6. Record Keeping – HR must be efficient, well organized, and computerized to keep track of information on employees. HRIS – Human Resources Information Systems Computerized reservation system for record keeping Employee Personnel file – A record of basic information kept on each employee.

Labor Relations – Workers who are members of a labor union Labor Union – The purpose of a labor union is to make sure that the union members get fair wages, decent benefits,and safe working conditions Collective bargaining – The way that labor and management discuss what they expect from each other.

9 (8) Major Functions of HR (Cont’d) 8. Employee Retention – All efforts made to keep good employees and reduce turnover. Turnover – Occurs when an employee leaves the company and another employee must be hired to take his or her place

10 OSHA (Occupational Safety and health Administration  An agency that makes sure that the laws and regulations in occupational safety are carried out

11 ADA-Americans with Disabilities Act  This act ensures that people with disabilities are treated fairly in public places and in the workplace.

12 Family Medical Leave  This act is designed to help workers deal with family needs and still keep their jobs
