The Information Age... An Introduction

Objectives To be aware of key technologies used to convey information To be aware of how technology allows us to present information in different ways To understand how information can be shared quickly, allowing people greater interaction with others To understand some of the issues and challenges surrounding the use of technology

What do you need to do? Your work will need to be presented in an e- portfolio We can not start building the e-portfolio until we have content Starting today, you must write careful and structured notes into MS Word You must not plagiarise!!!!

Key Technologies

1.The Internet – “The global superhighway that facilitates the transfer of data and information around the world” (J. Morgan, ICT for Edexcel, 2006) – Using e-mail and websites, we can share images, sound files, textual documents and videos with people anywhere in the world The internet and the World Wide Web are not the same! – The Internet is the infrastructure (the physical network of computers, cables, servers etc) – The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the medium of the internet

2. Multimedia The term given to systems that enable the interactive use of text, images, video, animation and sound – The components of a multimedia system need to be converted to a digital format (e.g. Sound can be in.mp3,.wav etc) – Diverse components converge into one fully interactive system – www.teach-ict.com www.teach-ict.com

3. Broadband A high capacity communications link that connects the end user to multiple supplier networks This term comes from the expression “Broad Bandwidth” This system uses multiplexing – which means that many channels or services can be sent back and forth along a single cable at the same time This is fast technology, that enables us to transfer full motion video, voice communication and data over the internet

4. Wireless A radio-based system that allows rapid transference of data and information without a physical connection

5. Digital Television DTV technology transmits TV Programmes by encoding them in a digital format. – Better sound and audio quality (HDTV) – Interactive – Electronic Menu – On Demand – Recording/Pause/Rewind live TV

What else has changed?

Society Influences the WWW or vice versa? Gem Sweater Peter Pan Mahir’s home page

Unit 1 – The Information Age: Key Technologies Write detailed notes on the following: 1.The Internet & World Wide Web 2.Multimedia 3.Broadband 4.Wireless 5.Digital Television 6.Web 2.0 For each technology, you need to provide a definition and an explanation of how they might affect our daily lives (work & leisure)

Plagiarism & Referencing You will be submitting your work electronically It is really easy for the assessors to check for plagiarism You must reference all your findings It is good practice to follow the “Harvard Referencing System”“Harvard Referencing System”
