OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Dissertations at Lund University Some facts: Dissertations from Lund university available on the web since 1996 (circa 2,800 dissertations) A (Swedish?) dissertation may be a traditional monograph, but more often than not, a dissertation is a composite document. In this case it consists of an abstract, a summary which in itself is a sizeable document, and a number of articles The print version is the original

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Scripta Academica Lundensis Dissertations very early on the web: Scripta Academica Lundensis 2,800 dissertations described by their authors Some fulltexts (circa 70 PDF:s)

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Scripta Academica Lundensis Homemade metadata - no strategy for interoperability - OAI was not an option in 1996 Local interoperability with the library catalogue etc? Keeping the metadata simple enough for doctoral students to create Classificaton? Use of keywords, simple browsing on faculties possible

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Scripta Academica Lundensis Preservation: keeping files on CD & local server – all very manual from start to end Copyright: Each individual author gets permission from publishers, and then sign agreements with the libraries regarding fulltext publishing on the web Standard agreements created, for authors to sign and send to publisher

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Scripta Academica Lundensis Improvements 2003/2004 New improved service (soon)! Metadata/interoperability: XML DTD for dissertation metadata at Lund university [1]1 Expressing metadata in various ways; such as different MARC and Dublin Core formats

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Scripta Academica Lundensis Improvements 2003/2004 Workspace for authors with upload facility to archiving and publishing area A calendar of disputation events Cross-references for included papers, links to e.g. PubMed, local journal databases etc

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Arkiv Ex – Sverige (X-Files) Master/bachelor theses URL: etc/ Collaborative effort by five Swedish universities OAI-service provider for diploma work Relevance for the impact of OAI dissemination in Sweden (Swedish universities), raising awareness and providing help

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Arkiv Ex – Sverige (X-Files) Master/bachelor theses Common national metadata model; LCD Dublin Core OAI-set structure for describing subjects

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Arkiv Ex – Sverige (X-Files) Master/bachelor theses Allows for local repositories to have extravaganza metadata, but kept very simple at the national point Local services provide data for X-Files Sweden Next phase of project Oct interoperability and preservation guidelines workpackages for scientific publications

OA-Forum WS, Bath, UK, Jessica Lindholm, Lund University Libraries, Sweden Discussion 1. Documents - Creating, obtaining and structuring documents for metadata extraction - experiences and challenges. Differences in useability: SGML, XML – HTML, PDF 2. Metadata interoperability - Metadata for theses – dealing with the needs for national and/or international interoperability. Classification, Searching and browsing 3.
